Previous thread: Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™ >Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
Modern models: >X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light >T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Quad Core Compatible, Old keyboard swap on *30 series >T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0 >T440s - best price/performance ultra portable >T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)
Why ThinkPad? >Used machines are plentiful and cheap >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet >Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop >Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain >The best TrackPoint™, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support
If I took the gamble on a CTO 1024x768 x60t, and end up librebooting it with an incompatible LCD, is it still useable with just a VGA monitor until I replace it?

bought pic related for $175, how did I do? >i5 2450M >8gb ddr3 ram >256gb ssd >no webcam >genuine 9cell battery
Sometimes the best deal is buying one that won't turn on, and just swapping the motherboard with another one.

Do we agree that in the newer Dells are vastly superior to the current state of nupads?
Luis Martinez
I love how paranoid some sellers get claiming grade B when the unit is practically mint.
James King
nah

Burgers always have it super cheap.
Eli Taylor
w2c the cheapest x220 battery in Europe? 9-cell or slice.
Isaac Diaz
user which thinkpad do you recommend for industrial controller development? (it will run ubuntu 18.04 server with realtime linux kernel patch)
Jace Davis
In the UK 9 cell is quite a lot cheaper.
Bentley Edwards
my x220t won't even boot to bios, or will turn on, flicker the screen with green, and turn off. thinkwiki says 1/3/3/1 beeps is bad dimm or bad dimm controller, would bad ram alone cause this and is that the likely cause? (wary because this started immediately after someone picked it up by the tablet half) also, if I were to abandon it, is there a modern laptop that's an x220-replacement (or t420 if necessary, clit mouse/repairable/durable/good keyboard, and updated cpu/screen)? I saw the x210 but lcdfans isn't responding by email, and I don't know if I have the time for manufacturing+chinese shipping anyway
I need mainly docked computer so weight doesn't matter. I'll use it for internet, music, old games and watching films.
I'd like to have 4 core i7 in the future.
Prices (I live in Poorland so converting it into $ is pointless, but okay).
T430 with i5 3320M with new lid and palmrest: $235 (888zł) T440P with i5 4300M with new palmrest, lid, dock, trackpad and hdd caddy: $317 (1200zł) W530 with i5 3320M: $396 (1500zł)
I already have dock and HDD caddy for 30 series.
Which one should I buy?
Kevin Sanchez
thinkpads don't get much lighter than this, x230 is like 1.3kg and the newest x1 carbon is 1.1kg, something like lg gram 13 is maybe fit for you? although it doesn't belong in this thread it's the lightest laptop I can think of
I have p50. What can I do to make p50 more enjoyable. I already changed LCD display. How much is a docking station?
Joshua Ross
T420 vs T430 Mainly for youtube (720p60fps), music, browsing. I really loved T60 keyboard so I wanna buy T420. Or should I go T430 and change keyboard?
eBay. Especially the ones that end middle of a work day. I picked up my i7 w540 for $152 shipped (typing on it now). I paid around 110 for my i7 x220.
Just depends on how patient you want to be.
Zachary Carter
>T420 vs T430 Be warned, the screen is shit in both laptops. If you want to watch videos on it you should consider the 1080p screen mod or another laptop.
Nolan Torres
>1080p ips mod in muh t420 >alienware 900p tn in muh t430
feel a lil smug every time someone in tpg bitches about stock tn
Adrian Powell
Got a panel in the mail for my X240. The stock bottom end TN panel is absolute dogshit.
Brandon Wilson
Found a company in the UK that repaints and restores already good condition x220s if you ask for A grade, only catch is it's £200 for an A grade i5, 8GB, 128GB SSD model. Still worth it because it literally looks brand new, not even so much as key shine.
If you are gonna build on a server then just the newest with the better screen and battery
James Perry
eGPU setup options for T400, anything not horrible?
Christopher Morales
>eGPU setup ____, anything not horrible?
no

Finna hook up a GTX 1060 mini 6GB to my x220, wish me luck bros.

Looking at the A485 for BLACKED friday, but haven't seen much fanfare for it. Are the mobile ryzen apus no good?
Samuel Gray
>x220 with an i5 >Four hours of battery life on a fresh brand new 9-cell with zero power-savings optimizations
>T420 with the same i5 and the same 768p resolution >Should have less battery life considering the screen is physically larger and thus requires more power to light up >Seven hours of battery life on a fresh brand new 9-cell with zero power-savings optimizations >And also less reprehensibly bad build quality than the x220, to boot
Currently rocking a T430 with a1600x900 screen and i5-3320M, and 8gb RAM running ubuntu.
I've had it for years and it's been through a lot as my main productivity machine. The only things I've had to do to it was replace the heatsink and keyboard.
I've thought about getting an x230 so I could have a smaller machine to play around with.
Leo Jones
>T440 >no p
Jeremiah Baker
This guy: is full of himself. That's a perfect price for what you got, which is a very well specced-out X220. Good job.
I went for the x220 because of the keyboard, no webcam, and price relative to performance. I don't think a new thinkpad would be able to compete on those fronts.
Nathaniel Mitchell
Well you can get a 6 core that hits over 4Ghz so I think price relative to performance you can do insanely better, not to mention exponentially longer battery life, lighter, and a better screen.
James Taylor
Does the japaneses keyboard have any downside in typing experience if you don't speak japanese? Or is it just fine?
You'll notice that there's probably some keys that you'll miss using that you probably use regularly, and the fucking space bar is a tiny limp dick. Other than that it looks cool. I don't know why you'd ever get one if you're not at least trying to learn it or already do.

If you can't write a basic puppeteer script to scrape for awesome laptops and add them to your cart then you don't belong on Jow Forums.

hi guys,
which 3rd party usb-c dock should I use for t470 ? I basically need one FHD HDMI, couple of usb 3.0s for external storage and keyboard and charging. I'd also need a compatible charger recommendation. Or just any 45/65 W usb c ? I'd like to keep the lenovo one in my backpack/ready to pickup without having to unplug it from the laptop/dock.
thanks
Carson Morris
oida, i got fhd display + adapter for my t430s from ali for ~100 euros

The number row on my T440p has given up the ghost so I'm looking for a replacement. I see a number of ebay listings like "New keyboard for ThinkPad T440p", but I know from previous times buying parts that "for" usually means it's a third party one that's compatible. I really like the key feel on this thing so I would like an OEM one.
Where/how do you guys look for reputable replacement parts?
