Hey Jow Forums, poorfag falling for the VR meme here

Hey Jow Forums, poorfag falling for the VR meme here.

My computer is absolutely good enough to run any sort of VR, but question:

Currently, the Rift is $349 atm. Do I drop the extra 170 or whatever the difference is including tax to get a VIVE, or is the Rift actually an O.K headset? I just want something good enough to run shit like SUPERHOT, Gorn, Robo-recall and VR chat and other entertaining VR shit (Ace Combat 7 too). Without making me sick. I've currently experienced VR moving around a room for about 45 minutes to an hour in one session, and I didn't ever really feel sick, but other things do give me motion sickness like reading in a car and shit; but I was using a VIVE. I've never used a Rift before.

Also, consider:
I don't have a fuck ton of space, I'm only really able to stand still in one spot. Is the analog stick controller more suited to this location or should I still go with the VIVE if the Rift is actually an irredeemable piece of shit?

So, basically; do I get the Oculus Rift for 349.99 now (assuming its not that bad)?
or do I wait, since the VIVE isn't going on sale for Cyber Monday or Black Friday or whatever and is just staying fucking 499.99 no matter what and just buy that in a couple of months? Does it ever go on sale for less than 499?

(im not getting the oculus go)

Does VR have any good applications besides toys? Because all I ever see people talk about is playing games with it.

>Do I drop the extra 170 or whatever the difference is including tax to get a VIVE
Yes
>is the Rift actually an O.K headset?
No

Porn, probably
I remember going to Anime Expo and watching some dude hump a fucking blow up in one of the adult booths with a headset on.

the minimum space to use roomscale on the vive is 2m x 1.5m. like you can't even set up the boundaries smaller than that, so you would just end up playing seated.

the controllers shouldn't be any consideration? are there any seperate attachments or anything for them? one or the other isnt more suited to a relatively stationary player?

Is the rift limited to that too?

1. All VR headsets are uncomfortable.
2. No VR games are fun.
3. VR is expensive
4. You WILL get buyers remorse if you didn't buy it specifically for porn and only porn.

the vr headsets werent particularly uncomfortable to me, but i disagree about the fun part
i enjoyed myself in the time i spent playing them
i know its expensive thats why im trying to make a better decision, while at the same time getting VR

>in the time i spent playing them
I can guarantee that time is less than the return window.

Just remember to return the shit when you get bored because I fucking guarantee it will be within a few days.

The Vive is objectively better, on a better platform, and you can always spring for that expensive ass wireless setup later.

That being said I find it less comfortable that the rift particularly the controllers.

Nope. There are lots of neat immersive experiences but that was always kind of the expectation.

I used to work with them nearly ever day and the fun doesnt really wear off, unless youre trying to use them 4 hours a day every day.

Theyre a fun luxury item, they're far from a must have but theyre not like netbooks were.

>fun doesn't really wear off
Neither do the fucking dents in your face from watching a 3d movie.

i wasnt aware the oculus came with a free cuck brand im fucking sold

Hanging out with Jow Forums in VRchat.

Buy the Vive. Or consider Pimax.

Loosen the strap you fucking dingus. You shouldn't have any marks on your face after an hour of use.

Pimax? can it play everything the other 2 can? I've actually never heard of it at all

i fell for the VR meme today while playing war thunder

fuck that shit is amazing

do you pilot shit in that game with it? the only time i tried to play it i either ran into server or installation issues so I gave up without ever actually playing it, but one of the biggest reasons for getting into VR for me is to play dogfighting games and shit, Ace Combat 7 included

Different user, I tried warthunder and Il2 in VR. It was cool but It didn't really interest me since it requires a decent hardware setup (pedals/joystick/throttle) to make it immersive along with a lot of time spent fine tuning said setup. The experience felt clunky with a cheap hotas.

My favorite is VTOL VR since you can interact with the instrumentation using motion controllers. For the joystick I just rest the wand on my armrest and calibrate the position of the virtual joystick in the simulation to match the position of my armwrest.
Worked better than I had expected.

The wands are too big and it just doesn't feel right having virtual hands ingame when holding one.I am still waiting on valve knuckles which should be far better since they emulate your hands better (finger tracking) while retaining controller functionality (trigger, thumbstick, touchpad, A, B, Menu).
So it will feel less awkward toggling switches, but it probably won't work as great in emulating joystick.

The only big issue I found was yaw, twisting the joystick for yaw was not great..

which one do you have? VIVE or Rift?
I'm probably going to end up going with a VIVE, I'll just wait till theres a sale or something, hopefully there will be one on or near Christmas or monday, but as of now i dont see any news of that and it says its 499 undiscounted.

Vive is better room tracking Rift has better controllers. It's up to you what trade off you prefer.

I recommend waiting for the new Valve HMD.
I love my Rift, but the res is too fucking low and you will notice it.

Vive has the worst fucking support ever. Just go read Jow Forumsvive about it. This alone is a reason to get the Rift. Aside from that, the touch controllers are way better than the shit want. Just don't buy anything but exclusives on the Oculus store, and everything else on Steam, and you won't be locked into the platform should you get something else next gen.

This is no longer true if you get a 3rd rift sensor. Vive can do larger play areas but only a small % of people have enough space to take advantage.

Wrong. I love my VR headset. Still play it regularly.

It's only a limit for games specifically advertised as room scale. You could play a non roomscale game with the vive or rift with a smaller area, and walk around the virtual rooms. It's just for games like Gorn where the play area is a static size, and you have to be able to reach all of it.

>Does it ever go on sale for less than 499?
dude, go on craigslist. people are selling them for $300.

only person selling it near me is in the bronx and wants to suck my penis if i buy it. also theyre selling a vive pro for 1200, so its less economical

the art tools in VR are definitely gonna help designing 3D printed stuff.

>the art tools in VR are definitely gonna help designing 3D printed stuff.
or you could just design it in a 3D CAD program like every other 3D model you fucking dumbass

Wut game? Also i'd wait for the new valve headset and save your money for when it comes out.

>hurr durr if it works why improve it.

designing in 3D CAD takes ages, and the UI is not friendly to the average art student. I'm talking about simply art pieces here, not about making gun mods.

>Does VR have any good applications besides toys?
Porn

Why would you need it for? There are some specific software being developed, but for normal user it's just games, porn, social and maybe development tool.

1) Played vive for hours and it was fine if I set the straps fine
2) Superhot, Beat Saber, VRChat were all fun. Can't wait to try elite dangerous or other simulators
3) Stop being poor
4) I don't think so. I want to use it mainly for developing

What's a good middle ground for AMD cards for performance and price? Found one on Newegg for $150 and it doesn't seem bad. Should I cop it boys? Also thinking of going with the shitty but okay headset in pic related.

RX570 is on the low end, but you'll manage.
The cheap WMR headsets aren't bad, but they don't have hardware adjustable IPD (google how to measure it). If your eyes are more than a couple of mm away from 63, avoid the cheap WMRs and either get the Samsung Odyssey+ ($300 right now at MS stores and on Samsung's website), a Vive, or Rift.
The Odyssey+ currently has the best panels of any VR headset, better than the Vive Pro. I have the older non-Plus Odyssey, and prefer it over my Vive.
If you want to do social VR and be a cute anime girl in VRChat, you'll probably ultimately want full body tracking, which means go for a Vive or be prepared to pay a premium later on when you have to buy Vive lighthouses to do a hybrid setup. For what it's worth, VRChat is probably the closest thing to a "killer app" for VR there is right now. There's a fair number of good games, but between all the ones worth playing, you might get a couple hundred hours of gameplay out of them before getting tired. Wearing VR Socks and being an anime girl in VRChat will offer you hundreds more.

Honestly mostly want it for vr chat. I tried it at my friends house on his vive and it blew my mind, it felt like using the internet for the first time again. The fact I can just walk into a Persona coffee shop, sit down at a table, and have a conversation with complete strangers is amazing. I'll keep my eye on the headset you suggested, I guess it's a better idea to invest in something a little more expensive to later want something better. Thanks user.

Also moving into a new apartment with a pretty big living room so I'm excited to try it out with a lot of space.

Again, if you think you'll ultimately use it more for VRChat than anything else, you'll probably want full body tracking eventually, so the Vive makes a bit more sense, since you'll just need 3x tracker pucks to do it, which currently cost $100 each.
Else, you need the 3x pucks, and 2x lighthouses to add it to a Rift or WMR, which will run you close to $450.
At this point, probably close to half of the VR general regulars in /vg/ have full body tracking.
In any case, consult that thread, they're probably more knowledgeable about VR than Jow Forums at large, and they'll probably gladly teach you about the mysteries of the Proteus effect.

Yeah i did, first i tried flying LA 5-FN and i nearly shat bricks on how accurate the movements were inside the plane and all the details that was inside it

Although i piloted using only a keyboard and a mouse, it didn't stop me from immersing into it.
The G-Forces the plane was pulling almost seemed real and got my little head dizzy while flying that shit.

I really wanted to join a realistic battle with the planes, but i was too afraid to fuck up

Oh yeah, i think this was the exact headset i used to play war thunder

t.

don't listen to Vive shills. Rift is a better product for a better price. Especially since you have a small play space, you won't be able to utilise the only thing Vive is better at. At everything else Rift is superior. Even if they were the same price Rift would be a better choice, paying 170 for a inferior HMD is retarded. You've been warned

I mean paying EXTRA 170 for inferior product is retarded.

I hope they come out with a more precise controller design soon, so far I like the rift one the best because it actually fits a relaxed hand, the wand is kinda shit imo. The knux looked cool but I think they were canned during design phase.

Knuckles aren't cancelled, they have been sending out devkits still. It's fucking valve though, so nobody realistically expects a consumer release in the next 6 months. "Bundled with half life 3", essentially.

Until they actually give hard info on a release date, rift or samsung oddysey plus are the headsets to buy right now. Vive is too expensive for what you get.

I'd sell mine for like $250 if somebody offered. It's been in its box for a year. might be worth putting some fealers out offering to buy?
