SR-009 might be snake oil, but the L300s are as good as you're likely to come up with, energizer dependent, of course. The membrane that makes sound is basically cigarette pack cellophane and weighs nothing, making distortion almost non existent. I think that's why EVERYONE knows Stax are special as soon as they hear them.

Why do I have a buzzing/hum, very low, when tabbed in games? Hum changes with framerate and isn't constantly the same. I guess interference? My set is plugged on the motherboard with jacks.

Let there be trolls! I just got these three days ago, and my instant impression is they're phenomenal. They truly have Stax-like clarity, they seem very low distortion. Additionally, their frequency response mimics my fav, BD-770s, wit great low bass extension. These phones actually made me hear the "treble rape" Beyer haters spew about the 770s and switch to the 1990s (which are about perfect).
But if you can barely afford these then you can't afford an amp to drive them, and they need an amp, they're the least efficient headphones I've ever used. But they are comfortable for hours, even if the adjusters seem cheep. But for this $$$? 5 Stars, MF!

Because they enjoy the hobby of trying audio equipment. It's not hard to get decent quality, and most people are happy with that. In terms of value it plateaus pretty quick and everything past is mostly marginal gains and differences in preference.
I think it's the same with music gear. I can get the tone I want from a cheap, simple setup, but half the fun is experimenting with different sounds and variations.
