CPU >CPUs with less than 8 threads have trouble delivering a consistent 60fps+ in some games >Athlon 200GE - Bare minimal desktop/gaming >R3 2200G - Light gaming(dGPU optional) >R5 2400G - Consider IF on sale >R5 2600/X - Good gaming & multithreaded work use CPUs >i7-9700k/8700k/8700 - If you have a $2000+ budget >R7 2700/X - Best value high-end CPU on a non-HEDT platform >Threadripper/Used Xeon - HEDT
RAM >8GB - Light desktop use / if you don't mind closing web browser to free up RAM for games >16GB - Standard amount >32GB - If you have to ask, you don't need this >CPUs benefit from fast RAM; 2933MHz+ is ideal. Check "more" for true latency formula
Graphics cards >RTX 2000 cards are worse performance per $ than previous gen >Avoid cheap MODELS ie MSI Armor (Mk2 is ok), Gigabyte G1/Wf, ASUS dual, and others w/ small heatsinks and low quality fans 1080p >RX 570/580/590 w/ Freesync or 1060 6GB - standard 1080p 60fps+ options >1050 3Gb or RX560 4Gb - lower settings and/or older games >Vega 56; 1070Ti if you already have Gsync - for higher FPS w/ a high hz monitor 1440p >Vega; 1070Ti if you already have Gsync >Waste money - for higher FPS w/ a high hz monitor 4K >Upscale from 1620-1800p. Or 2080Ti, but awful value OpenCL use >Vega 64
Storage >Backup before using StoreMi >Consider a larger SSD (better GB/$) instead of small SSD & HDD >2TB HDDs are barely more $ than 1TB >M.2 is a form factor, NOT a performance standard
Display >Consider 75hz minimum; 60hz are mostly old models >Always consider FreeSync w/ AMD cards >START YOUR BUILD WITH A MONITOR FIRST, then make a build to drive it appropriately
Help me comrades, I was all hyped up to go for a ryzen build but user and wiki say the sequel that hardware fixes Spectre be out in January (causing the older ryzens to lose a heap ton of value overnight without considering the performance increase). Now I'm going to regret it either way if I buy something or just suffer with my potato.
Adam King
Unless you're fishing for b-die, you can get 16gb of 3200 for around 120. That's pretty damn good. I paid 90 for 16gb 1300 ddr3 in 2012, but those days are never coming back.
Justin Bennett
DESU a lot of literature is just escapist faggotry, just like muh gaymes. Lots of non-fiction is completely pozzed from what I've seen too. Basically non-scientific reading is for fags in 2018.
Asher Powell
Not if you just stick to the classics. There's enough in the canon to keep you occupied your entire life.
Obviously if you waste your time reading garbage it's dumb.
Now that ram is cheaper we can complain about GPU prices :^)
Xavier Allen
>ram comes out 2 years ago for $90 >it is now $120 >it should be $40 >not extremely earth-shatteringly unreasonably fuck-ass mad
Jason Peterson
>>it should be $40 according to who
Xavier Johnson
580 or 590?
Matthew Bennett
Is a Red Dragon 4GB RX 570 for $140 a good deal? Will be using it for older games and graphically non-intensive newer games at 1440p. GNU/Linux so I'm not considering Nvidia.
Carter Bell
the value in technology over time when there isn't market manipulation in the form of price fixing
Has there literally ever been a 50%+ price drop in 2 years ever
John Jenkins
Who is 500gb SSD?
Jayden Ward
Crucial memex500 Samsung 860 evo
Parker Morgan
Fair enough
Kevin Rodriguez
Looking for a 1TB HD, what're the best options?
Liam Fisher
Spinny disk or SSD.
Jose Rodriguez
I already have a 500gb SSD for a few games that are load intensive. I don't know if I need a larger one or another if the other ones I have aren't load intensive, it'll primarily be storage and games that aren't bogged by loading.
Adam Evans
yes pretty much every component for the last 30 years ignoring the last few years
Anthony Brown
get the seagate 2tb one
Evan Lewis
I paid $100 for 32GB of RAM on June 12, 2016.
Nolan Allen
>recommending memegate
Brayden Evans
Thoughts on having two m.2 nvme ssds?
The bottom slot on my motherboard is gonna be used for my os and I'm planning on filling the top slot with games. My concern is temperature. Do you guys run into heating issues with a similar set up? I don't really have anything to deal with the heat.
Blake Morgan
the seagate 2tb one has the same failure rate as the western digital blue
James Walker
see
Isaiah Kelly
>put AC right in front of PC so intake fans blow really cold air in how well would this work? why not just get 1 with the amount of storage you need for both your os and the games? itd be cheaper
Andrew Wright
ddr4?
Cameron Gutierrez
dont use nvme for OS, you wont see any difference for OS boot times between SATA, I've even heard nvme is slightly slower because of the slower initial boot up (this is unless you have already bought them)
William Young
>dont use nvme for OS, you wont see any difference for OS boot times between SATA, What about in game load times
Lucas Johnson
its the same thing, you will never see any noticeable real world difference between nvme and sata, you will however see real world difference when transferring large storage files, but OS, games and general programs will be pretty much the same
Austin Phillips
it applies to all ram which you can verify if you can find a chart that goes back to 2016 or use the wayback machine to check old prices from newegg here's one for a 16gb stick of ddr4
>Samsung - 860 Evo 1TB is 180€ Looking for a 1TB ssd for around 150. Recommendations? It's the last part of my future build de.pcpartpicker.com/list/J2J7gw i'm not quite sure about yet.
>I've even heard nvme is slightly slower All other things being equal, NVME will be faster than SATA. NVME is designed specifically to cut through the storage stack crap of AHCI, including reducing latency. It's literally built for NAND.
Gavin Ortiz
Didn't brexit weaken the pound and make pc components more expensive?
James Bennett
It's just a personal preference that I keep them separate. I already have a 250 gb 960. But I guess I could use that for games and buy SATA for the OS
don't have room for a big TV right now, i was thinking instead to buy a 27" monitor for both my PC (as a 2nd monitor to my 25" Ultrasharp) and for console gaming. I just bought a PS4 Pro, but i am probably gonna return it and trying to pick up a regular PS4 for cheaper because of all the PS5 rumors floating around and because the $430 after taxes buyer's remorse is kicking in hard. I mainly PC game, I only picked up a PS4 for RDR2 and Death Stranding, maybe Bloodborne.
it's 1080P with HDR, but is a VA panel, which i havent heard much about.
there's also the fact of using it on my PC, I love the Ultrasharp because of the fantastic color accuracy for video editing, will i be dissapointed with either of these monitors side by side? Dell makes a 4K ultrasharp but it's like $600 and i'm not sure if i can swing that right now.
what do you guys think?
also i know this is pc building general so sorry for the consolefag question, i just figured you guys would know your shit best about monitors.
Julian Harris
I'm looking at the B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC, but it only has two M2 slots and pcpartpicker tells me that if I have something in the #1 M2 slot that two of the SATA 6gb/sec ports are disabled. So if I have a 970 EVO in the M2 slot, I'll be able to use at most four of the six SATA ports, correct? I'm going to need more than four of these SATA ports so that sucks for me.
Same thing for the #2 M2 slot. If I have a second 970 EVO then I can have at most one graphics card in the computer? That sucks because I want to use multiple GPUS for ML.
So what's a good Ryzen 2 mobo that doesn't suffer from limited expansion options?
it makes no sense though, I have no issue with actual games but randomly this happens with my browser
Cooper Watson
Is Celeron G3930 + 4GB DDR4 + SanDisk 120GB SSD enough for 2 9 yo girls to do their homework on? They fucked 2 laptops and an iPad up so their mom asked me to build a desktop for them. The system will run Windows 10.
yes but if they already have broken 2 laptops and an ipad they dont deserve it
Daniel Howard
>They fucked 2 laptops and an iPad up I think they should be getting a good whipping instead of a new computer.
Andrew Flores
Agreed. 9 yr olds will fuck up your hard work. Just buy the cheapest prebuilt you can find
Lincoln Ward
They still have to get homework done and their mom is afraid of letting them near her laptop.
Aaron Thompson
make sure to properly lock down the machine with good antivirus(malwarebytes premium etc.) and tight parental controls or your girls will eventually end up watching porn and gore. but yeah, 4gb ram might be a little tight since chrome alone can up that much quite quickly, but all in all it should be enough, maybe a little slow, for research and word processing.
Blake Morris
Maybe when zen 2 drops, 7nm architecture promised, more room for integrated graphical fun
Brayden Baker
So I've been screwing around with OCing my old RX 470 today, and I'm experiencing crashes in strange ways. I can get a stable overclock when I run GPU benchmarking programs like valley or furmark, I can leave them going for an hour no issues, and I can game with 100% utilization just fine. However I get to less intense situations like the odd chat menu in Witcher 3 or the end of match menu in RS2, that's when I get a GPU crash. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
hook them up with a raspberry pi, monitor, keyboard and a mouse in a pizza box and say "it's an advanced system so dont break it"
Nolan White
What's the point of crossfire/SLI support on motherboards with only one PCI-E x16 slot?
Justin Mitchell
>make sure to properly lock down the machine with good antivirus(malwarebytes premium etc.) and tight parental controls or your girls will eventually end up watching porn and gore. Will do. >4gb ram might be a little tight since chrome alone can up that much quite quickly, but all in all it should be enough, maybe a little slow, for research and word processing. Yeah I share your opinion in this regard. The original build had 8GB and a G4560 but her mom asked for something even cheaper so I'm downgrading things.
Asher Adams
>their mom Cuck.
Brayden Mitchell
She's my godmother actually.
Isaac Edwards
Are there even any mobos that could handle decent iGPU? Seems like everything has 2 phase SoC VRM at most, and half of those don't even have heatsink. Someone would have to design a mobo specifically for this.
Jason Barnes
uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/mPhMKB Could someone point me to a good RX580 with non shit cooling for under £200, as I haven't bought a GPU ever, thanks. I also saw that there was a 15£ off promo for any item on newegg.
Julian Barnes
>built computer >sweat a shit ton >pretty sure I got oil and/or sweat on almost all of the components what do I do
>Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Instability shows up in strange ways, especially on a card that's been pushed to its limits. I'd dial it back a bit. I've cooked a few cards of my own fooling around with overclocking software. It was never anything dramatic, just increasing instability and eventually artifacts getting worse and worse.
Michael Murphy
Okay, I knew nothing about computers yesterday. This will be my first build, for pretty much just gaming.
CPU: i7 9700k Cooler: Cryorig h7 Motherboard: z390 aorus master/ultra (whatevers paired with the cpu on newegg) Memory: gskill trident z 16gb Storage: 860 evo 1 tb ssd Video Card: gtx 1070 ti 8gb Case: nzxt h500 Power supply: supernova g3 750
>I knew nothing about computers >i7 9700k oh, it shows start with the op
Leo Peterson
who is this
Zachary Perry
Maybe it's the cable?
Blake Johnson
do cases have sound "cards"? Like when I plug my headphones into the case is the dac/amp in the case or motherboard?
Cameron Cruz
Guess I'll turn down the frequency. Currently using the AMD wattman in brainlet mode so I've only really messed with power, set the voltage to max, and then played with the frequency slider.
Jose Reed
How important is Freesync for the average consumer/gamer? Looking at amd APUs but the number of b450 motherboards with built in display ports is low.
Juan Thomas
hey, this might belong to /sqg/ but my uncle wants to throw away his old pc. told me he wants the hdd to securely erase. i took it out of the case along with the orange small cable for it and i also took 2x2gb rams. now, since i dont have a desktop, only the t-series thinkpad, what is the cheapest way to connect the hdd and use it ? can i buy some shit to use it as an external hdd?
Ethan Baker
HELP PLZ,I cleaned my psu from the dust with a brush, a very small one, now how do i get the static electricity to wear off? Also my psu how do I not fry my mobo when i plug in a psu? does the voltage set itself automatically? forgive my brain gymnastics gentlemen.
Sebastian Reyes
nvm, it's in the screenshot too. Yep, your gpu is fucked.
Dominic Martin
need to finally buy a bigger HDD backup because my 1TB is running thin.
Will i notice any major difference between this 4TB My Book and the 4TB Easystore? The easystore is $80 but it's a smaller portable drive, the My Book is $85 and a larger full size drive.
Is refurbished stuff off of ebay generally trustworthy in your experience? The seller not being from china, obviously.
Asher Rivera
Should I get a magnetic or non magnetic screwdriver to build a pc
Logan Ortiz
magnetic stops screws from falling off and getting trapped in weird places which might cause a short later
Adam Hill
It's a nice bonus for a smoother experience but not something I would plan an entire build around. Get the APU for its other benefits by all means though. Yeah SATA to USB adapters are like 10 bucks. I seriously doubt you introduced enough static to damage the power supply. The PSU itself is shielded. Just ground yourself. Agreed. CPUs yes. Motherboards maybe from a well-reviewed reseller. Anything else I'd probably pass. Either is fine. I find magnetic to be kind of handy.
Sebastian Garcia
I wouldn't trust the shitty io controllers on those with 4 TB of data. Get an external dock and a HDD.
Colton Wilson
Cheers, for some reason the MSI mortar is selling more expensive than the tomahawk in the UK but apart from that displayport seems the weaker motherboard for expandability.
Joseph Gonzalez
Is there any downside to buying a psu with way more wattage than I'd ever use if it has the same 80+ rating and price as what my build needs?
Brayden Wilson
thx for the psu advice.
Brayden Sanchez
How fucked though? I have no issues other than that happening once a week and it only lasts until I scroll it away. I can't be fucked doing RMA + I live in Australia, I dunno what Sapphire's support is like here
Fine, but you're better off just going for a seagate. The price difference is minimal but they're still better.
Depending on the part, like the other dude said. Stay away from used RAM or GPUs
Carter Hill
just waste of money when buying it, and if its like waaay more wattage than you need it may not hit the efficiency curve
Tyler Morgan
Nope, just cost but a safety margin is good and you can expand your system in the future without needing a new PSU (as long as it isn't worn out by then)
Ian Thompson
>How fucked though? I have no issues other than that happening once a week and it only lasts until I scroll it away. I doubt its your gpu then, probably just your browser
Andrew Powell
I've just installed and tested my current Cl16-18-18-38 ram kit. (pic related) It replaced my 8gb Cl16-16-16-36 3200mhz ram kit, and I was told that there would be a measurable performance decrease due to my current ram having worse timings. The only difference that I've noticed so far is that I have 50 points less or so in Cinebench (currently 1250 points or so compared to max 1307 with the previous kit). I've used Ryzen DRAM calculator to see if I can get the timings to be the same and there is no way I can run my Cl16--18-18-38 at Cl16-16-16-36. My CPU is an r5 2600 (no OC) and GPU is a 1070. I got this kit for 120€ which I consider to be fairly reasonable, when considering current prices. A B-die kit is 90€ more expensive. Should I still try and mes with the timings, even if I'll likely get bootloops and no stable and error-free results?
