Will foldable catch on?

If they don’t, what does Jow Forums think will be the next advancement from the common smartphone?

>Holographic displays
>Flexible arm mounted displays
>Rolled up displays

it'll be a meme like the vr meme

Will vr ever take off? Looks like it's one of those failed project like glasses. Home automation iot and shit all look like they will never be successful.

>Home automation iot
That shit is pretty people in murika aka the botnetland

>people
oof, I mean, popular.

It won't. Smartphones won't change much just like laptops haven't changed much. Smartphones replaced dumbphones in response to world wide web, there's nothing to respond to as of now.

Vr never takes off because there is nothing to do.
Vr chat is unironically the only good use of the technology so far, and you didnt even needed vr for use it.

No SAO clones no streams to the super bowl nothing that can actually make you go "hey thats fucking sick". Pornfags will literally fap to anything so they doesnt count.

I have bigger hopes in AR nowadays.
Anything that doesnt requires you to put a TV screen on your eyes i mean.

When Sony and Micro release their next gen consoles vr will become more popular and cheaper
Still wont be used that much tho

Is there actual need for them?
I really cannot think of one purpose it would serve to have such a phone.
Actually, only single one, and that is having e-paper/monochrome small screen on back/foldable for time and music player. Cant think of much else really.

Actually add to that maybe larger epap/monochrome screen for reading ebooks. Or smaller one just for notifications/shit. Tho I believe multicolor notification led serves for that purpose just fine.

I just want an 8+ inch phone that fits in my pocket.

Normies would rather have a thin/pretty glass slate though.

I can't wait for all the inevitable Foldgates when normies fold the shit a couple times and the display will finally show creases and maybe even cracks.

Uhh, do you think a thin foldable smartphone is a viable engineering choice? That's the only way something of that size would fit in your pockets.
No use, but these are the inherent downsides if it takes off:
>I can't wait for all the inevitable Foldgates when normies fold the shit a couple times and the display will finally show creases and maybe even cracks.

First they need to bring response times for interactions with your phone down to the sub-millisecond scale, VR/AR with lag like we have now would be frustrating

Foldable screens will also be extremely scratchy since you can't put proper glass on them.

>scratchy surface right on the edge of a phone
Well shit.

>hurr it will allow smaller phones
Yeah, if you throw out the battery.

If they manage to make them similar to those tablets in Westworld that the employees use, sure. They need to be thin, have a lot of screen space and that extra screen needs to be able to be used for something.

Fuckable phones are the next big thing.

VR is fantastic for sim games.

Most other "games" are a gimmick, with Superhot VR being about the only thing that does it right and is actually fun to replay.

I do a bunch of sim racing so I have gotten my monies worth but if you just bought this for other games and porn I can see where the buyers remorse would come from. Theres a ton of potential and Im glad they are continuing to work on it, but its still a ways off from being amazing enough for the average consumer to pull the trigger on.

Nice DS

If the durability and thinness there it will be popular among the office worker types that currently use tablets.

I hope phones die.

Once smartwatch tech gets good enough we can have that reality,

It might take a few decades to catch on but I can see it happening cause then you would almost be guaranteed not to lose your phone. They just need to find a way to make messaging not suck so much dick

5million hdms sold, that doesn't really count as failure

VR has been a thing for decades.
But just like TV from it's early days, it will take even more decades for it to become commonplace.

no, it's meme like 3d tv and curved tvs - those were made only because it was possible to do so and normies are prone to shilling

manufacturing meme devices is extremely wasteful, it should be banned - waste of worktime, resources, money and environment

Touchscreens used to be meme devices.

They're still meme devices. Fuck touchscreens.

fuck it's been a few week since I'm lurking /g and you cucks find a way to hate everything
Fuck phones
Fuck television
Internet is a meme
Fuck computers
Telegraph is a meme
Fuck cars they are meme
Fuck wheel
Fuck fire, it's shit

Fuck this post.

Leave this board if you hate technology so much

Fucking this. Those Westworld fold out tablets need to happen asap.

VR's great, it's just niche. People mistake 'not instantly everywhere and replacing everything' for 'dead and buried'. It might end up more mainstream in the future, it might not. We'll see.

Fuck VR.

>what does Jow Forums think will be the next advancement from the common smartphone?
Adding a headphone jack. Smaller phones. Bezels so you can hold them without buying a handle attachment. Replaceable batteries. Larger batteries.

>t. poorfag who can't afford anything better than cardboard

fuck my ass

Most likely not, it's not exactly practical which is probably why Samsung is aiming the technology at a niche audience.
We've just about hit a dead-end in smartphone design, the last innovations/advancements in the common smartphone would be on the software side and not the design side. You can really only do a handful of tasks on a modern smartphone, DeX is sort of a step in the right direction.

Fuck my wet boipussi

The thing is that the whole smartphone industry is stagnating at an alarming rate. You can't make the phones bigger than they are, you can't make them thinner than they are, you can't make the screens bigger because we already have bezelless phones, you can't increase the screen resolution since the human eye can't tell the difference anymore, you can't improve the battery life any further without putting the users' lives at risk. What you can still do is to marginally improve the storage and the computation chipset on the devices. That's pretty much it. That's why Samsung (and soon Apple) are forced to try make these absolute crackshot prototypes somehow profitable.

Fuck your hemorrhoid-ridden asshole.

Cheap AR headsets when?

the price tag says no

when Microsoft decides to take the permanent beta tag from hololens and crash the magic leap and meta 2 market.

I wish it was 3d
Hell by now it should be standard on any display

What I would like is a foldable monitor so I can take that with me wherever I go, alongside a small form factor PC. That would be a nice replacement to conventional laptops

I remember seeing this Nokia concept video on youtube. I was 12 and watched it on an eMachines Never Obsolete!(tm) beige box and crt.

The features in the concept are stupid, but the idea allures me. Too bad everything went the way of the botnet though, everything seemed so promising then. At best we'll make a very entertaining digital slave shackle.

What is the porpouse of it? Will they try to come up with it after launching like the iPad did?

yes sir

It might catch on. If men could fit tablets in their pockets, they would be much more popular (women carry purses anyway, so they're probably the main target for tablets). This is basically the solution.

wow, it's been a while since i saw something that made me as excited for the future as this video did

I wish Glass hadn't failed in the beta testing; I'd much prefer if mobile development moved towards a glasses display and AR 'touch' (and voice) controls. But nope, early designs made people look like tools, so its abandoned forever (or at least the next decade)

>I have bigger hopes in AR nowadays.
I remember microsoft promoting their hololens with minecraft in a presentation years ago. The fucking thing costs 3000$, my guess is it'll be much longer before we will see it's use outside of an professional area.

Attached: hololens.png (1478x538, 278K)

Yes! That would be great. Thin, foldable, powered by usb-c

I think it won't be a replacement for smartphones, however it will definitely be a replacement for Tablets. Hence, foldable is the future of tablets.

I wish but it looks flimsy as fuck and that flexible film over the screen not only scratches but also warps at different points which sucks if you seen the videos

I don't know if it will catch on or be practical but I want a foldable phone just not a overpriced one. One that folds flat or has a bluetooth keyboard that stores in-between otherwise it looks like it might break.
