Yes. I have a handful of things on the desktop, though most of them will also exist on the taskbar or start menu.
I use whichever is most convenient for the time, which changes dependent on what things I have open, where I have things open, and where my mouse currently is.

im thinking custom 8x8 pixel looking icons with the background on the same grid. the background could also be pixel art and could look like an overworld of sorts.

Yes my desktop is filled with shit. When I get tired of it I make a new folder and shove my entire desktop into the folder

No. Why would I have icons in a place that's always covered by windows? I don't have a wallpaper for the same reason, just a solid colour.
