I've been using Slackware since 1998 when I first started using Linux.

It's basically been an abusive relationship this entire time. I tolerated it...but now instead of rocking -current I'm using Manjaro dev and I've never been happier.

Don't get me wrong, Slackware is still great...but it isn't the best distro unless you literally are a masochist.

Antergos was my choice. Easy setup while still maintaining comfy Archlinux backend & actual official repos. Still KDE is so much better than it used to be. My go to for anything not lowend.

I'm wondering what people run linux on because I'll see the "battlestation" thread, and I'm assuming they use Windows for the most part if it's gaming focused.

Like is Linux more common on home built PCs, laptops, old laptops? alternate laptops you only sometimes use? I understand you can "run it on anything" but I'm wondering how that factors into the average user. What machine(s) does the average Linux user run linux on?

Nouveau sucks balls. If you have to use an Nvidia card install the proprietary drivers for it. Or just get an AMD card. I can run the new DOOM 1080p @ 60 hz under open drivers on Linux.

There is no "average" linux user. Some subsets may be more typical than others, but the ecosystem is incredibly varied.

Personally, I have Linux running on all of my personal machines. I've even got unRAID on my desktop along with 2 RX580s so I'm running both Windows 10 and Manjaro in tandem and it's great. I can just drop over into Windows whenever I want to game and whenever I'm not, I just literally use that install for mining on that same card. In Linux, I can still play all my Linux games and do whatever productive stuff I want.

Because I use Ubuntu. Also, Konqi is cute!

I honestly don't like to support distros that make money over projects from other people. The only decent distro in the arch-family is parabola.

i mainly use shit from github, and generally most people who post their shit to github put the dependencies needed down. not hard. dont even need pkgtool.
managing your own dependencies is good. you can pick and choose what dependencies you want. say, you are installing something. 'you need gcc and cmake'. you want cmake but you dont want gcc. you realized you were missing cmake. grab it. forget about gcc and forget about whatever trash you were trying to install

I use Linux for everything, from newly built high-spec PCs to old laptops that haven't seen use since Vista days. The barrier of difficulty and incompatibility has shrunken considerably since years past. Almost everything works just fine on Linux and approachable distros are increasingly common.

I can use three screens on my X230 running KDE (doesn't matter whether Kubuntu or Manjaro), although the manufacturer limitation is two screens at a time.
I cannot do that in Windows or Ubuntu/Gnome

Jow Forums's colour schemes are generally far nicer than the sort of stuff these sites have and is also less ugly, it's got nothing to do with animations and shit it's the fact that they look like a website some colourblind retard made in the late 90s, there are plenty of sites that are functional and lightweight without looking like shit

Should I convert to arch? I have an x200 but on Ubuntu, the battery only lasts for about 3 hours. Does arch have more efficiency? Or is my PC battery dead

If you do switch to Arch make sure to install tlp to improve battery life.

Manjaro is far too unstable, when I was using it multiple times an update broke it.

If you're a guy who mostly uses his ThinkPad docked, you can even set battery charging thresholds in the tlp config (Thinkpads only though), but it doesn't sound like you need this.

I don't have a dock, maybe I'll get one someday, but that's good to know so I don't kill my battery. Thanks, user.

Slackware's current is for people who know what they're doing, which I doubt you do, there's a reason why 'Releases' exist (hint: It's because Slackware isn't rolling release), so of course you're going to be in a 'masochistic' relationship when you're using it in a way that isn't how it's supposed to be used.

Slackware is hardly the best, but 'rocking -current' on a distro who's specific point is to use old and reliable software and then complaining how it isn't good is retarded.
