Also, the current 5G available in the US, isn't available for cell phones, it's available as a fixed wireless service only, you have an antenna and modem installed in your house.

It's FAR cheaper than paying for FTTP deployment. But you get ~50-75% of the performance.

I upgraded from 300mbps to 1gbps fiber because with multiple heavy users on 300mbps I would have issues while streaming and other people downloading at the same time.

With 1gbps most servers will cap out at 80MB/s or even less, so you've got PLENTY of remaining bandwidth for other users to stream, or download their own things.

It's especially nice to have for bulk game downloads, like BLOPs4 being around 70GB took me around 10-12 minutes instead of hours.

I got my FTTP fiber installed for free and I pay $80/month for gigabit without a data cap now on my 3rd year of service, and this price is locked in for 2 more years.

Comcast offers 2gbps FTTP fiber where THEY pay for $15,000 of the install, you pay for $1000.

The WHOLE point of 5G fixed wireless is to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the cost to deliver service to the customer by removing the ONT/OLT and fiber costs, not to mention the labor costs.
Why pay a team of 10 mexicans to dig ditches for a couple hundred yards to install fiber for EVERY CUSTOMER when you could install a single fiber drop to a 5G tower and deliver 300-500mbps+ to all the surrounding houses at minimal out of pocket cost to the provider.

Verizon already offers unlimited 5G fixed wireless in areas where they have the network for it. They install for free, and they charge around $80/month.

They have to hire the Mexicans to prep and build tower sites. I'm sure, as usual, unless you live in a large metro area, you are shit out of luck getting 5G before the next iteration takes hold. 4G still is shit where I live.

I live in a densely populated suburb an Verizon still doesn't have fibre here. They did however put up 5G antennas on the telephone exchange building.

Verizon has stopped all expansion of their true fiber network, anything from this point on will be 5G fixed wireless based, not FTTP fiber.

I use mobile 4g for the last mile connection to my house and honestly it's every bit as good as comcast. 5G would presumably do that for more people, better.

That being said, I think the people in here who are touting the cost savings of fewer fiber drops for 5G are forgetting that each drop does need to hlbe able to handle a potentially large and variable number of users connecting to it. No, because the real cost for laying fiber is in the labor, not the actual cost of the fiber itself.

When you lay fiber to a neighborhood for a 5G tower, you're not laying a SINGLE fiber cable, you're laying a bundle of fibers that will deliver far more bandwidth than you'll reasonably need.

This makes it so if a single fiber were to get damaged, you've got plenty of spares. They might not even all be hooked up, they might have 4 or 5 fibers just waiting for more customers in the area before bringing them online.

The neat thing about fiber optics is that you can shove a nearly unlimited amount of data down a single pair of fiber.

The biggest problem is going to be with the actual RF, because there is only so much spectrum. This is mitigated somewhat by using many small towers that cover small areas, so radio frequencies can be beneficently re-used.
