How "tech savvy" are your parents?

Are you the tech support in your family?

Attached: 1541799946838.jpg (247x313, 14K)

my dad has been using the same nokia phone since 2001 and buys batteries in bulk on ebay.

he won't get a smartphone because 'it won't have my contacts' even though i spent a few hours adding them to his gmail account. he won't even get a newer nokia dumbphone like the 8110 4g or something

>A few hours
Are you dumb?

Using a dumbphone is not dumb at all.

I hate orange man and unironically think he’s bad, but goddamn would he not charm me with a mustache like that. Looks great.

he wanted me to add everyone from his phone and from his invoices over the last 8 years. the dude runs his own business so it was roughly 750 individuals/companies.

>I hate orange man and unironically think he’s bad
Faggot

My mom downloads and prints coupons from online, and one of these sites require that you download and install a "coupon printer" software. It's the most sketchiest shit I've ever seen. The coupon actually won't print if you don't have it installed. No matter how many times I say don't install that, she does it anyway. I ended up installing sandboxie on her computer to have her do her coupon shit on there.

Dad's a graphics designer, been using computers since late 80s yet still a tech illiterate. It honestly baffles me

Brainlet

>Dad keeps the router password secret
>Ask him to login on my computer so I can "mess with my Minecraft server"
>Keylogged his ass and added my own admin account

love your dad, fell for the smartphone meme 8 years ago and now I'm using an android without gapps and severely crippled so it doesn't become addictive

My father worked as a software/hardware engineer in the 70s and 80s and worked up to a VP level in the 90s and 2000s. He knows FORTRAN, C, BASIC, other low level and assembly langueses. He’s also really good at hardware with different boards and chips. Right now he’s retired and has an iPad. Here’s one of his old laptops that he has. He has an IBM laptop from those days too.

There are people who know nothing but there job.
For example there are countless number of programmers who wouldn’t have a single clue about what to do if there PC stopped booting or there OS decided to fuck itself

>It honestly baffles me
If they just stay in the same frame of computer usage, it's not surprising at all. I know a couple designers who use Macs for decades and otherwise know almost nothing about computers. They have been using the hardware like people use smartphones now.

he looks better with a good chad cut

Attached: 1538749182815.jpg (5142x3428, 964K)

>He knows FORTRAN
some badass motherfucker

Says the guy using the term "orange man" and big words like "bad"

he also forgot his BP vest that day

“Orange man bad” is a meme dummy.

>pic related
Thank you for the laugh.

My sister said that consoles and tablets are not computers and kept denying the truth after i proved her wrong

Nice

My dad is still just as useless as most dads yet fixes issues with database systems all day.

My mother struggles with anything beyond web browsing/smartphones.

Theyre as good as they need to be in order to not be a pain in the arse

How old?

Dad is an EE and very familiar with more advanced aspects of technology but frequently needs help with more simple things (gets confused between youtube volume + system volume + speakers, can't do basic troubleshooting like restarting a phone or laptop if there's an issue, etc).
Mom knows how to use chrome and M$ money, and on her phone she can use chrome and whatsapp but that's pretty much it.

Both of them are incredibly receptive to any advice/help I offer them though so I'm perfectly fine with helping them out whenever they are having trouble with anything.

>kept denying the truth after i proved her wrong
They're literally unable to admit they're wrong

She's 11

is it a girl thing or a normalfag thing

oh, it is just a child thing then. Cut her some slack user. No 11 year old is a rational thinker.

I have never seen my dad use a computer. He still talks about the internet like it's some newfangled thing that will never catch on.

Agreed, it would suit him quite well.

A series of tubes

dad is pretty experienced with electronics in general. computing wise, he mostly just uses his iPad, but he knows more than most of the people at my school.

my mother pretty much only does web browsing/stuff on her phone.

me and my brother are kind of the tech support in the family when it comes to PCs even though we both only know pretty basic stuff.

you must be a richfag then?

He's just trying to limit his exposure to the botnet, user

>parents

My neighbour had a Samsung tablet which had the ios lock screen in front of the real keypad unlock screen. Swipe up to enter a pin.

my parents are. they cut me off at 12 and made me do odd jobs around the neighborhood for money.

My dad asked me to fix his computer because it was slow. I ran CCleaner and stopped programs from starting on start up. He got mad that all his programs didn't start instantly even though that was slowing his computer down and for some reason the kept important documents in his recycle bin.

My dad buys a bunch of expensive shit he never uses. He bought a $3,000 projector that's only been turned on 2 or 3 times. A $2,000 stereo system that he doesn't know how to configure and doesn't use. A $900 printer for photos and fax even though he only occasionally prints plain text documents. A few months ago he bought a MacBook Pro but he only knows how to use the web browser and went back to his old laptop after a few days. I could go on and on, but it wouldn't be tech related.

>brother on the phone with tech support because he has problems with his laptop
>tech support asks him what operating system he has
>he says hp

My mom recently found out about facebook and now all she does is put on make up for hours and take photos of herself for facebook.

My mom does wonders with Excel because it's her job. Other than that, she doesn't really do much else other than Facebook and simple web browsing. I'm pretty sure my dad knows a bit more, since a long time ago, I found his porn torrents on the family computer. He also swears that having a lot of stuff in storage memory is the main culprit behind computers slowing down. If anything not work related doesn't work, they usually end up calling me for help.

I'm quite impressed at how good he is with electronics and how stupid he is with everyday computer usage.
How can you work programming FPGAs and ask me how to download a youtube video?

YOU THREW AWAY THE TRASH?! user HOW COULD YOU I KEEP ALL MY CLIENTS PHONE NUMBERS IN THERE!

Tell him to instead buy the S&P 500 Index.

Mom's a college administrator who uses a lot of database shit. She knows a lot more about normie crap like email clients and Google/Microsoft products than me, but constantly asks me questions about them because I'm a software dev and she thinks I'm an expert at everything software.

Dad's a professor who uses a computer well enough, is pretty good at finding solutions to software and acquisition problems he encounters, but somehow refuses to believe that computers are simple machines, instead insisting that they have consciousness which is seeded against his own motives. I think that's just an act, but it's still annoying.

Your dad is fuarking based user

>i have autism

Nyeh? That's non-sequitur as shit.

No, he should buy bitcoin

You should, uhm, forcibly penetrate, the truth into her, uhm, through her backdoor.

Your dad is probably a Jow Forums regular.

based parents

>wifi signal is unstable
>they blame the ISP

My dad was always a Mac user. I grew up on Macs, but ever since I got Windows I can't go back. I don't talk to my parents anymore.

Copy to SIM card, move SIM, copy to new phone (or leave on the SIM). Basic dumbphone feature.

I like Punished Trump myself, dude looks badass bald, like Lex Luthor or Mr Clean.

Most people use routers and modems provided by the ISP.

>Proprietary
Ew user gross

That's called being an adult with responsibilities.

People that want to be good at their jobs, tend to focus on the job specific knowledge, and then actually have a life afterwards.

>My dad was always a Mac user.
ouch

like a true rapist

>how savvy are your parents
My mom doesn't understand/can't comprehend what she's looking at and it takes about a hundred times of repetition for her to remember how to do something. My proudest achievement is that she actually learned how to do ctrl+c ctrl+v, along with a handful of other window manager shortcuts. My dad is mostly fine on the other hand but he still asks for help sometimes.
>are you family's tech support
Yup, both family and friend's tech support. I don't really know anyone who's truly tech savvy, and I live in a big city.
This is truly tech savvy. At least your dad doesn't fall for meme consumerism and expensive = better stuff.
I've met people who could program but still had no knowledge of hardware
Heh. On the other hand your brother probably gets a lot of girls
My mom asked about it too but I told her it was evil so she never got into it
That's pretty cool, I'd like to watch your mom doing wonders with excel
Not sexually man, just seeing excel masters do their thing is satisfying
Ah, here's one that's similar
>Hey user I ran out of space on my computer, my home screen is full
(My friend thought that his laptop had no more storage left because his desktop was full)

In the end, I'm okay with being tech support for family and friends as they praise me and have my back. However if you do tech support for living I imagine it must be really degrading

Mom is a normie, knows the basics enough that checking Pinterest and doing spreadsheets at work aren't a problem. Learns pretty quick.

Dad needs constant hand-holding if it doesn't involve watching Youtube videos. Gave up on teaching him how to even copy and paste because he "always forgets". Still have to go over to my parents' house every so often to put music on his iPod shuffle.

yeah, I'm happier for it now because it taught me a lot.

>Are you the tech support in your family?
You better fucking believe it. They can't do anything other than tap icons on their shitty Applel products.

Jesus fucking Christ

>My dad was always a Mac user.
Damn user I'm so sorry. But glad to hear you have a real computer now :)

>mother is 65.
>mother doesn't know how to send SMS.
>mother semi-knows how to use Skype, talks to friends.
>on the laptop I built her, she only knows how to use Youtube, watches lots of videos, learns new recepies, gardening things, making muschrooms, picles etc.
>still doesn't know how to use bookmarks, only uses firefox history, and remembers the names of vids she watched.

This is what communism does to people, guys.

>talking to your parents
Must be nice being a normie.

>be visiting parents over Thanksgiving
>their PC shuts off randomly while we're browsing through family photos
>we laugh it off, check to see if the cat bumped a cable or something
>nope, everything is fine
>try and turn it back on
>no dice
>unplug their speakers, external HDD, mouse and try again
>nothing
>pull it out of the cabinet thing it's in
>dad says he gonna try his works tech support (???)
>tell him to wait while I work
>he's bitching at me while I'm doing day 1 IT support diagnostics
>unplug HDD, reseat ram, try minimum amount of ram, try each ram stick separately
>he's telling me it's unnecessary and that's he gonna call
>Tell him to wait, again
>get to the problem, a ram slot was broken for some reason
>Put the ram back in, omitting a stick from the broken slot
>boots up just fine
>he thanks me
>goes back to browsing pictures
why are boomers so impatient? he's always telling me to build and fix shit myself but when I actually do it he flips out.

You have to go back

Stories that never happened for “1000” Alex
Also your a nigger

>wifi is slow
>mom adjusts modem & router like an antenna to make it better

I went over for thanksgiving and their router was still using WEP / 10

>write some C code
>dad comes along slaps me in the face and replaces my subroutine with highly performant assembler code
t-thank you dad

slap him back and tell him that this products portability trumps slight performance gains

Does your wifi router not have antennas?

I saw him using some cryptocurrency app on his phone. He probably does have bitcoin.

My dad is a sysadmin which is funny because I'm actually pretty bad at computers

>mom
just uses her phone (LG G6) or some Samsung Tablet she has (nice screen), often needs help with stuff like storage running out but generally has a handle on it
>dad
also has an LG G6 (the carrier really pushed them onto them) and has a shitty laptop that he bought new for $300 at walmart. always complains that it's slow but i told him he should have got a thinkpad. he does more advanced stuff like streaming, but often needs help and gets malware because he goes to fake TPB sites
>sister
got a S7 Edge for free (it has a pink line through the screen), uses some shitty tablet i helped pick her out. It's decent but it's like a windows tablet that you have to charge the keyboard separately. had to help her with it when the keyboard died the first time and wouldn't work. otherwise she is pretty good at using it.

Do you think this is an ongoing trend? Like in the 1800s were kids like ‘this is called a lightbulb mom, plug it into the wall. Don’t put a flame to it or you’ll just melt it’

>Cable has 2 channels for the same station, one SD and one HD, the HD channel number is the SD number + 500 so channel 5 in HD is 505 etc
>When you watch an SD channel it says overlay to press a red button on the remote to change to the HD channel
>Dad watches SD channels anyway

My dad is a programmer. He's pretty tech savvy but too used to Windows and hates anything CLI. He tried to install Gentoo but gave up cause he couldn't figure out how to use it with full-disk encryption.
He usually gives me his old computer stuff when he upgrades every other year, so that's nice.

My mom hates computers.

I've seen a lot of newer used samsung phones with that pink line across the screen on the right side of it. Seems like a common occurrence.

My mum has last years moto g +, never closes all the apps etc she is using I autistically close them if her phone is on the table,

Attached: Vine-logo.jpg (620x350, 86K)

yeah MKBHD had it happen to him, don't know if it was a samsung, but it was definitely an OLED and it's from being dropped even a small amount. It didn't appear for MKBHD for several days after the impact.

Didn't know TI made laptos
>Intel Inside
>Not something /comfy/ like 68k
Disappointing

>Didn't know TI made laptos
Yeah, they sold their line to Acer in the 90s.

Nah, he needs the full GEOTUS lion beard

Based dad. Using a smartphone is the less tech savvy thing one can do, even though you'll probably miss out on a lot of social life nowadays. Fuck this brainwashed generation.

This. Fuck faggot beards.

Your parents are more and more based as you go on

Yeah, everyone that hates trump talks about how fat he got so fast. People are ignorant. When celebrities are making open, unpunished calls for your assassination, it's not a bad idea.

I almost hope he's not retired. That could make him some massive dosh.

Ok Jow Forums so I'm collecting money for my new pc which I want to put together myself but my mom thinks it's funny since I'm so young and she thinks I'm gonna break something. Well, what if my dad put it together? She thinks he in no way can put it together even when I went to his house I saw him building his pc and he managed to do it. Well, my friends brother knows how to build pcs, he built his and he's gonna build one for my friend so maybe he could build one for me too. Mom doesn't beileve that either. I'm about to fucking break. PC buidling has become easier and easier over the years so even a fucking 9 year old can do it, but no, she thinks you have to fucking study 5 years to learn how to build pcs like fuck off woman maybe for you, yes, because the only machine you know how to operate is an oven. So how do I show her how easy it actually is to build a pc Jow Forums?

>1800s
>Lightbulbs at home were common

My mother wants to buy a brand new Mac computer, yet her computer is complete overkill for her invoicing/facebook use.
My sister has a terrifying amount of screen burn in on her phone and laptop. Her laptop screen similarly has a cable loose or something somehow, and has to have the screen on an autisticly specific angle or it won't display. Refuses to let anyone touch it, constantly pokes at stuff on the screen, knocking it off that autism angle, gets angry at the laptop, blames the manufacturer, blames everything about it, says her iPad doesn't have this problem. Yes, it's exactly like those cunts that shill "My Apple product doesn't have this problem"
I suppose it's a good thing I only have 2 direct relatives, thank fuck my dad left me and I have no other siblings desu
