Even for unlocked only phones there is usually a chinese and a global version, with the chinese one having an artificially gimped down set of frequency bands, which means that the data/voice performance will range from slightly to none at all, depending on which country you want to use it on. It's been true for a while aswell that global versions get out of production/stock extremely fast (often not even a year after release), while the chinese ones remain available for considerably longer. Of course all of this is a non issue if you're planning on using a custom kernel+rom, because then modding in extra bands that were blocked on the software level becomes possible, if not trivial.
