Is a Q6600 good enough to run Windows 10 Ok? Is it worth adding a new hd to?

No games but want snappy internet use.

Yeah, just use an ssd and you'll be ok.

I have an old one with no hd, mom needs a computer. Can either buy used OptiPlex or try putting in new hd.

Q6600 + 8GB RAM + SSD + midrange GPU = comfy computing

This, I was using a shitty 1TB HDD, but Q6000+8GB and a decent card is a killer budget setup for the time I had it and even now.

I'm using the same setup, don't know about Windows 10 but using Linux it's all good

Those LGA775 series sockets ran beasts. I sitll have an e5450 myself. Ten years, no issue.

Dude you can get an x5650 pc for under $200 USD.

I built that exact rig back in highschool and put it in a sexy lian li case. Everyone was super jelly. I still use it every day.

Where did you guys got 8GB? 2x4 DDR2 RAM?

I got two 4GB kits of Corsair XMS2 800MHz with 5-5-5-18 timings on amazon for 69.99 each, it was not cheap, but the rest of my system was and it performed great for late 2014.

i got a q8400 (about the same as a q6600 but can do SSE4.2 which helps for Far Cry 5), along with 16gb DDR3 and an 660 Ti (basically a slightly slower 670) - paid probably $100 canadian pesos to have this all going, and works pretty damn snappy. doing a lot of games at 1080p Medium and web is slicker than shit on a doorknob.

For everyday usage, a Q6600 is fine. I was using one as my main rig up until a few years ago, but once I tried playing Stellaris it was just too much for that thing to handle. I cobbled together an old Xeon with a shitty LGA1155 motherboard for that, but my mom still uses the Q6600 desktop, it's perfectly fine for HD video and the like so long as you have a half-decent graphics card attached.

Good luck finding drivers for that mobo
Even my x58 chipset is fucked on win7

I came here to shill the e5450 lga775 conversion you beat me to it. Im running mine overclocked to 3.1 ghz w/ gtx 770 and I can pretty much run every esports game.

holy shit, 95W power draw isn't even that insane
would be great for a homelab desktop too bad I'm from yurop

Nice. My motherboard is M-ATX and only support 2 RAM slot, so I only have 4GB RAM max.

this
current desktop is a compaq SFF
>q9550
>512GB SSD (SATA/II in SCSI mode)
>8GB core (max)
>dvd writer
>1TB spinning rust
>GT 730
still doing ok after 12 years

im also interested, just found this pc dumpster diving the other day
it had a dedicated graphic card but for some reason ubuntu is only detecting the integrated intel graphics
CPU: Quad core Intel Core2 Quad Q8300 (-MCP-) cache: 2048 KB
clock speeds: max: 2494 MHz 1: 1995 MHz 2: 1995 MHz 3: 1995 MHz
4: 1995 MHz

BLINK.
OK, then there's something wrong with my gf's bomb-box (Yorkfield C2Q, 4GB) - it's performance in Win10 was pitiful, so she still runs 7 on it.

current computer
>CPU: Quad Core Intel Xeon X5470 (-MCP-) speed: 3950 MHz
>GPU: Nvidia 1050ti
>RAM: 10GB DDR2
i was about to build a new rizen7 system because my cpu fan died and figured i'd just upgrade now rather than keep patching it, but i got a new fan to make it last a few weeks, and temps went down from around 60-70 idle (before fan died) to 35-40 so i'll be keeping this one at least til next year
i dont do gaymen but i can watch 4k 60fps hdr no problem, while keeping waterfox with 50-70 tabs open and shitposting

Usable, I guess yes. Efficient, no. You'll need a GPU with modern hardware acceleration. For SSD one of these 25 € Chinascrap (Micron BX) suffice.
Why? Or did you buy them years ago? It doesn't make sense to upgrade these machines in the current year. I still have a Phenom X4 rig in my cellar which I use for my printers, but I would never upgrade it. Its running near 100 % when doing basic tasks like opening a reader.

I upgraded a couple old machines at work with chink Xeon L5410s (more or less the same speed as Q6600 but at half the TDP) and they work pretty well for web browsing. They do feel laggier compared to my home PC with 6700k and gayforce, but not to the point where it becomes annoying.

A SSD, even in SATA2 mode since that's the maximum S775 boards can do, makes a big difference so listen to .

DDR2 memory is much cheaper than DDR3 on aliexpress as long as you need

8 GB cost around 20 € here in 4 modules. You can get two 4 GB modules DDR3 for 20 € too. But DDR2 is much slower.

I recently got a whole Phenom X6 bundle with 8 GB and a MB for 60 €. And this includes the shipping already.

What about adding pci/e sata III? It would speed it up a little more. Also didn't some boards accept DDR3?

Might as well go the whole hog and slap in a PCI-E SSD at that point. And yes, plenty of 775 boards took DDR3.

Thats a pretty good find. My guess is an nvidia card or some obscure shit. Are you sure its not a sound card?

Only if you have a PCIe to SATA card lying around, the speed-up isn't worth the cost otherwise. And you won't be using a particularly fast SSD in a trash computer anyway.

I bought them in mid 2014, I retired the system in 2017.

Windows likes to have a modern GPU to offload graphical stuff.

Further, an SSD and 8GB RAM over 4GB really does help.

Yes, don't forget to slap BSEL on it though.

No. It'll run better on 8.1. All the added security, botnet and newer tech hampers with performance on older hardware.

Win10 likes 8gb of ram with a C2Q i find, and i have 16. what was your GPU?

I had a Skylake pentium dual core and it's fine for everything save games that need four cores. I did video editing on it, nothing huge, but it wasn't problematic
