I’m thinking about getting a Mac mini and want to use a thunderbolt eGPU with it. Will any GPU be compatible with OSX or is there a compatibility list somewhere?

Yeah, pretty much.

Generally speaking any AMD GPU is good, if Nvidia release web drivers for Mojave those will be usable to

Novideo needs extra drivers that don't work on Mojave. Any GCN based AyyMD cards should work. Just look what cards Apple use in other models.

what a coincidence, I'm thinking about buying a Prius and putting a turbo on it

Oh that cools thanks for the help. I’ve got an old RX 480 laying about so I’ll give it a go with that first.

I bet you smiled at yourself when you thought this up.

I did.

Yeah, a bit stupid.
But it's the only sane option if you need mac + external big screen(s) + good GPU( + VR).

What's the point? Mac mini isn't powerful enough for 3D modeling and OS X has a very limited amount of games.

Why do you have this on your computer?

I like MacOS as it’s a very nicely put together unix environment, and I have a few old GPUs laying around so figured why not. Never used an eGPU before but figured it might be cool.

I don't know if this is a good idea. I think there are some compability issues with eGPU, where it doesn't get recognised by most software.

for example this video

>not convert it to RWD and swap an lmp V8 in
Lmao

Kys nibber

Why would you buy and iMac mini when you can get the literal same PC for $500 cheaper?
> pic related

> inb4 muh thunderbolt ports and small profile
will you really pay $500 for those ports? Then why not get an Intel Nuc? Those little monsters even have a fucking Vega GPU with 4GB of HBM2, 2 thunderbolt 3 ports and a much better price than that shit.

Attached: imacMini_vs_PC.png (2002x2384, 783K)

pic related, this is the eGpu support from apple in their own software lol

now imagine how good it works in 3rd party software.

Apple at this point is a scam company.

>why would I buy a screwdriver when I could buy a hammer?

What are you talking about? Both do the same thing. You can even hackintosh the PC, making it identical to the mac mini.

I like macOS and thunderbolt is important for using an eGPU

Assuming OP is doing Real Work(tm) a Hackintosh is a shitty proposition since it’s likely to have major problems relative to a real Mac.

Even the best Hackintosh tends to have issues with wifi and audio. You’re almost certainly not going to find one that works perfectly, and updates tend to break them worse than Arch.

You’ll never understand since you’re a linbabby.

Linux and MacOS, both being either mostly or completely POSIX complaint, are natural allies you winbaby manchild gamer.

Fucking degenerate

whats up with all these guys mud wrestling?

Windows using pajeet making himself feel at home

I thought Apple used Nvidia cards in their high end Mac Pros, but upon googling I see it’s mostly AMD now. When did they change?

Since the trash-can Mac Pro model.

God I forgot that existed. Do they still make Mac Pro’s or is it just the iMac Pro now?

Hackintosh sound only good in theory. It’s unstable as fuck. Stop hating apple just because Jow Forums told you to, you probably use windows 10 anyway.

Do you already have an egpu box and a gpu in it?

If you dont why wouldnt you buy an intel hades canyon nuc instead?

Its basically the same price but has a vega gpu and you can put off the shelf memory/and m2s in it.

Twin 970 pros, 32gb ram and that shit is going to fly, also has twin thunderbolt if you want to throw a high end epgu on it down the road too.

Attached: 1519655148469.jpg (306x408, 17K)

That should work out of the box.

are mods asleep?

> literally the same hardware

what drugs are you using? It's only "unstable af" when people use unsupported hardware (Ryzen, Raven Ridge etc)

I want something with MacOS as I don’t really like Windows. I could always install Debian on it, which is what i use on my laptop, but have an iPhone and iOS/MacOS integration is kinda nice.

Yeah MacOS is a pretty nice OS. If it wasn’t for the apple tax and limited upgradeability I’d switch in a heartbeat.

Literally the only updates that will ever stand a chance of breaking a hackintosh are major ones (for example High Sierra to Mojave) and that's only if your a retard who decided to use TonyMacX86 shit

>Yeah MacOS is a pretty nice OS. If it wasn’t for the apple tax and limited upgradeability I’d switch in a heartbeat.
Hackintoshs are pretty nice, so indeed you can switch

cringe

Was considering it as I really like the MacOS aesthetic and the fact it’s a POSIX complaint *nix so I’d know my way around. Can I do it on any old computer or are their specific hardware requirements? Also does everything work or will I be missing features or functionality?

>Can I do it on any old computer or are their specific hardware requirements?
You should be fine with anything Intel. Avoid Nvidia GPUs.

> Also does everything work or will I be missing features or functionality?
everything works fine.

Most nvidia gpus work though. and some amd cpus too

that pc is going to be at least 4 times as big as the mac
also
>1x8GB
absolute nigger tier

Jesus, I had no idea how expensive these things had become. My mom got the 2009 model and I'm fairly certain that didn't cost much more than $600 (or about $650 once you factor in upgrading the RAM 2 GB to 4 GB a few years later).

Just wait until Apple requires those new T2 chips to install the latest Mac OS. They're going to stop the entire Hackintosh thing dead in its tracks, not to mention "non-sanctioned" repairs.

> too big waaaaaaaa
then stop being a faggot and get pic related. It even has a dedicated GPU and somehow is cheaper than the maclet.

Attached: wew.png (1484x1660, 530K)

>costs almost as much
>doesn't have macOS
You're a complete moron, I'm not even OP

> $150 cheaper
> has a great GPU with 4GB of HBM2 memory
> "costs almost as much"
> "I'm literally too stupid for hackintosh"

oh no a whole 150 bucks

God that looks fucking ugly

>windows 10

No thanks Pajeet

>no OS
>no PCIe SSD

fuck off, itoddler.

Attached: lad.png (2704x1770, 1.71M)

Is that skull photoshopped or was it designed by a literal 13 year old? Also I like a fully POSIX compliant OS, and I doubt it would run on that

>250GB SSD, no throughput stats
>literally named CUK

only AMD gpus. nvidia hasn't get their ass up to release drivers for 10.14 yet. so unless you want to run 10.13 you will be limited to AMD gpus. (polaris/vega is most compatible. rx 580 being apple's reference egpu)

>cuk

Missed a c, gaymer man child

>mobile processor
oh nonono

> Intel udh 630
OH NO NO NO NO

also
> mac mini
> "desktop CPU"
> core i3 locked at 3.6GHz
> that will be $900 plus tax, sir!

Didn’t even notice

Kek

>OP says he wants to use an eGPU to begin with, and wants a mac for macOS
>WHY DON'T YOU BUY THIS NUC WITH A MOBILE GPU IN IT
just stop

Itoddler logic:
> 4c/4t locked at 3.6GHz - Good because it's made by apple
> 4c/8t, 3.1GHz-4.1GHz, - Bad, not apple

> ignores the fact that the Nuc also supports eGPUs
> ignores the fact the the mac mini throttles down to 800MHz
