I used to use that but just use potplayer now. There are probably better options, but I can't be bothered with messing with players and shit now. I think back to how long I spent setting up mpc and it feels so autistic now.

It's not useless because of no updates, it's useless because MPC-HC includes everything needed for playback by default, only retards use codec packs.

for the last 3 years i've been using smplayer for everything.
has an mplayer and mpv backend, works everywhere, videos smooth as fuck, handles subs, multiple audio tracks etc. with ease and has a gui.
been using mpv before but it just sucked to much after a while
occasionally i need to use ffmpeg to cut or edit a video with hardcorded black borders or horrible settings, but i got my bashscript with examples for that shit.
never fuck around with the player, reencode that shit to work out of the box in any player
