ps3 works for youtube, netflux, hulu, etc.

problem is that you have to sign into PSN to access them and if one day Sony cuts off PSN on PS3 then those apps won't work anymore unless you hack the system. better off getting a roku stick or some low wattage stream device.

it also has movian which basically turns the ps3 into a htpc media center. can play mkvs, stream from pc, and it also has a plugin to grab videos from youtube.

plus a bunch of similarly named utilities for some fun reason (xman yman zman) that almost all do the same thing but not one does everything

PS3 never required PSN to use those apps. That was Xbox's thing. That being said, using a PS3 for streaming services is stupid and wasteful.

PS3 consumes alot of power just to run netflix.

Buy a fire stick and load kodi and video addons

PS3 Netflix app is very good and updated, but PS3 runs hot and loud compared to a ARM stick.

Yes, it works fine. The playstation store netflix app lacks some features of the web interface, like "viewing activity". So you're "continue watching" category can get a lot of clutter. You can always use the web interface to clean it up, tho.

getting illegal downloads is usually done through torrent, the streaming sites that have copyright stuff right on them to load from a browser are basically dead and they never really worked well anyhow (if the lawyers didnt get em, they'd usually have viruses).
So anything you wanna get you're going to have to download first and then watch on your own device. Which is generally preferable to streaming anyways. And if you already own a copy, its not illegal, its a digital backup.
If he wants porn there are the porn tube sites that have infinite numbers of vids and clips for free. And that sorta thing is only supposed to take 5 minutes anyhow. Only idiots pay for subscriptions to that, or, they're mega degenerate and the ones feeding leeched content to the tube sites.

Im not sure if he's wanting to get one of those downloader things to comm on bulletin boards or the darkweb but I think even getting one of those will have the FBI looking at you these days. Not that an iptv thing will work with those I think.

There's some real cheap stream sticks and boxes on the market. It's not like they'd have to spend an assload. The ps3 is still fine but it also takes up space and is a lot louder.

I havent downloaded anything that was x265.
I dont really find much content in that format either.
Also if it wont run in VLC (and x265 will not) then I dont get it.
Because I use VLC for my computer and both of my smartphones.

A PS3 would work. We have one hooked up to the living room tv and it streams Netflix, Hulu, yt 1080p just fine. Probably power hungry for that usage compared to a Roku though

If you have a spare PS3, it should work fine.
As easy as just push the PS button on the DS3 to turn on the console, push the left arrow and launch the last opened video/streamming app.

This, just get a Xiaomi Mi Box, it runs Android TV and because it runs Android there are a lot more apps available than Roku or Amazon Fire TV.

A ps3 is fine. Setup the ps3 at your house and create a pen and profile for him.

Get his Netflix credentials in advanced, if he doesn't have netflix start his sub for him and sign in for him. Add his credentials to your password manager and print out 3 copies for him.

Bring it over, set aside an afternoon, order a pizza and grab some beers. Connect it to wifi and show him YouTube and Netflix on the ps3

I'd recommend adding some video on a USB and attaching it and showing him that too. He could use it for photos, music, etc

if you enable hdmi link you can use your tv's regular remote on any playstation

Every other entry on nyaa is x265. And VLC can't run it on your PC most likely because it's old and doesn't support the codec
If your PC was powerful enough it could just brute force and decode through software
