I have a laptop with Nvidia Optimus graphics. It wasn't until years after I bought it did Debian have packages for it. Ubuntu and Arch did.

There's no reason why they couldn't have just had packages for it back then. Same situation for wifi drivers. I don't touch Debian any more, but it's only worth your time if you have hardware at least 5 years old.
