practically: browsers have quirks. if you render to standards and sites aren't coded to standard, the site will break. the end user doesn't care that it's the site that isn't compliant, they just want their site to work. now you've gotta start hacking shit up. (your hacks will break something elsewhere, which will lead to people coding their sites in a non-standard way to work on your browser, which will lead other browsers to need hacks...)
