Want help?
State budget & CURRENCY
Post at least some attempt at a parts list
List your uses, e.g. Gaming, Video Editing, VM Work
For monitors, include purpose (e.g., photoediting, gaming) and graphics card pairing (if applicable)

CPUs based on current pricing:
Athlon 200GE - HTPC, web browsing, bare minimum gaming (can be OC'd on most mobos with the right BIOS)
R3 2200G - Recommended minimum gaming
R5 2600 - Good gaming CPU with great value
R5 3600 - Great gaming CPU
R7 3700X - Overkill gaming CPU
R7 1700X - Budget video editing
R9 3900X - Professional tasks

RAM:
Always choose at least a two stick kit; 2x 8GB is recommended
CPUs benefit from high speed RAM; 3200CL16 is ideal
AMD B and X chipsets and Intel Z chipsets support XMP

Graphics cards based on current pricing:
Used cards can be had for a steal; inquire about warranty
1080p 16:9
RX 570 8GB - good performance with great value
GTX 1660 - standard
RX 5700 - overkill framerates*
1440p 16:9 + 1080p 21:9
RX 5700 - basic
RX 5700XT - standard*
RTX 2070 Super - higher framerates in some games*
2160p 16:9 + 1440p 21:9
RTX 2070 Super - standard
RTX 2080Ti - best fit for 4K but expensive
*requires complementary CPU and high Hz monitor

General:
PLAN YOUR BUILD AROUND YOUR MONITOR IF GAMING
Don't bother buying a new monitor for gaming unless it's high refresh with adaptive sync
A 250GB or larger SSD is almost mandatory; consider m.2 form factor
Bottleneck checkers are worthless

You can get a cheaper PSU aswell as mobo if this is an office pc. Maybe get 16gb ram. So you can easily multitask.
Like have several tabs of chrome + outlook + excel + autocad + explorer. I tend to have those open frequently. It'll help keep the system snappy.
Look up pagefiling for ram aswell.

I'm still trying to find a good budget and performance to aim for
so far I know I'm going to be using Windows 7 so the CPU needs to be compatible with it, and that I want a 1080p 144hz monitor but I'm fine playing non-action games at 60fps. I also want a second monitor for everything that doesn't require <1ms response times or more than 60fps, which is going to be 1080p 60hz and I'm going to try to get the best possible image quality for movies, anime, videos, maybe even specific games that wouldn't suffer too heavily from the increased response times and input lag
I want to play nier automata and maybe the new DOOM though, so those games can serve as a base point

Used 2600Xs and 1700s can be as low as $100-120 USD. While the IPC and max clock increases on Ryzen 3000 are great, it's still incremental if you didn't need more cores.

Advice for everyone. Look at the refresh rate and resolution of your monitor, look at the benchmarks for games you like to play, and get the cheapest Ryzen chip that meets those specs.

If not Zen 3 next year is really going to change microarchitecture with 4SMT per core and ram stacked on the io die supposedly. I'm on a delidded 7700K 5 [email protected] and a 1080 Ti 2 [email protected] The only reasonable direct upgrade across the board for me would be the 9700K which sometimes goes for ~$200 USD and a $130 USD z370m board because I made the big brain decision to get a microatx case right when multigpu died.

I was just going to ask a question in a similar vein. Titanium is a new efficiency certification, however, that efficiency is measured on a curve. So if I have a 600 watt titanium certified PSU, and I'm pulling 599 watts I'm absolutely not getting that certified number. So, if I'm a big boy and pay for my own power, and I know expected low, peak, and average draw, is there somewhere I can find where those efficiency curves are exactly so I can pick the correct PSU with the correct wattage?

We've seen this with Intel, but since no one in their right mind has has purchased an AMD cpu in 20 years, I doubt anyone knows anything about how they manufacture their cpus, other than the fact that AMD engineers think static brackets are for pussies.

Landon Gray

I'll preface this by saying I need this PC to make money. It's how I make my living, so keep your posts screaming "shill REEE" to yourselves.

I need a PC for editing work. I use Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and very rarely, Sony Vegas Pro. I need a ground up PC including new peripherals, monitor(s), drives, etc. I currently have
Xeon X5650 6c12t
Nvidia Quadro K620 2GB DDR3
Single 1080p monitor
No SSDs, 2x 2TB HDD's.
Shit takes like 35 minutes to render 1080p video and I'm at the point where I'm missing out on potential jobs because of how long it takes to render various customer's stuff. I have plenty of money, I just never figured my PC would be my bottleneck. This problem has only gotten worse with how popular my 4K content and slo-mo shit has gotten.

TL;DR
Is Intel still "superior" for Adobe compared to AMD? Would it be recommended to buy into Intel's X299 platform? Or is that dead? How about AMD's X399 TR?

Lastly, I need this PC NOW, not 6 months from now and "just wait". I'd appreciate help Jow Forums.

lol that is NOT a 1660Ti. Probably like an older card with a cooler thrown on it.

Well you get better stock clock performance, an easier Day 1 build, and then lots more overclocking headroom down the line.

overclocking
Well there's your first mistake. If you notice, benchmarks do have Intel chips at 5.0Ghz or even 5.1Ghz when possible against stock or at most, 4.5GHz AMD chips. Intel being able to hit 5.0GHz doesn't mean anything when all it's doing is making up for IPC deficiency. It does suck that AMD's OC headroom is shit, but being to OC a fuck load is irrelevant.

Aaron Murphy

no. However there's nothing stopping you from getting the 3600 now (which is indeed a far superior CPU than the 2600) in preparation for a new GPU down the line. Even a 1600 wouldn't hold back an RX580.

No, it's because they charge more for a WORSE product. Even at $200, I'd chose the 3600 over the 9700k. The fast context switching and other things better about Ryzen's architecture makes it objectively handle multiple programs at once more smoothly.

Those are some random-ass games. Some are over a decade old. What the fuck is the point here? No one is going to bother to optimize for older games anyway because it is a waste of resources. No one buys a new cpu to play older games. This metric is retarded and saying "hur dur 3% difference on random is relevant!" is like saying "my car can drive on the moon, my living room, main street, and icy roads, so it is great." It should be comparing likes-to-likes. Hell, some of these are not even pc originals. They are fucking rips and ports. Oh, wow. A card does worse when on a fan-made port that came out 20+ years ago. Man fuck everyone who says that things have to be there for "performance". I have an NVMe drive because it makes everything faster and better. Everything takes minimal time to install and update and open, even 30-100gb files. Same thing with my monitor, 1440p 144hz is the way to go. Its fantastic and any card can run games at good framerates with settings tweaks. I bought a secondhand gtx1070 and it runs everything at over 80 and since its 1440p, it still looks great.

New builders, just remember that buying the newest or best components wont be the best bet for YOU. I had more fun scouring for good deals and putting together a build for myself rather than follow these idiots' advice.

"Mhz" Buying a monitor with an over 100,000 FPS display.
Future proofing is a joke because it tricks people into paying more unnecessarily, resulting in extra money sunk into a build where the builder feels more reluctant to sell or hand down, when it would've been cheaper to buy a less future proof build and sell it 4 years down the line. Exception: Build a strong PC and stick with it 10 years no matter what.

If you're not an esports fps Hog, go with 1440p 144 Hz, as 1080p means more spent on CPU for inferior Graphics, and 1440p is better for other basic computer functions, like browsing Jow Forums. Also, 4k 100 Hz monitors are too expensive.

pcpartpicker.com/list/RwjqD2
alright so far I've got a bit closer to having an idea of what I need
Operating System
Windows 7, CPU must support it
Monitor
1080p 144hz, one in the list uses freesync so GPU must support it, probably going to buy a 1080p 60hz (likely a VA or IPS) prioritizing image quality later, not included in budget
Memory
open to suggestions, seems fine to me, 16GB is minimum but I'm assuming it depends on the motherboard, if it's a good deal then I'd like to get 32GB
CPU
took user's recommendation, however I'm open to changes, as long as it supports win7, preferably no workarounds

so in what order do I figure out the rest? I imagine next up is the GPU which needs to support freesync and have the right performance/price
as for storage, right now I'm keeping important stuff on an external 2tb hard drive, but I don't know how reliable it is (occasionally when making it do a lot of work it will make a noise, and it makes me very worried), so I'd like to get a reliable 2TB HDD with a good price:storage ratio to use as my main storage
does installing the OS to an SSD and using it as you main drive make a huge difference, even in games that aren't on the SSD? if so then I'd like getting an SSD, doesn't need to be big, likely going to just be the OS, programs and select games which benefit the most, probably going to prioritize price over speed over storage for an ssd, as long as it's good enough size

I've decided that my budget is $1000 but if I can save a little without sacrificing much then I'd like to
anything else I need to consider?

Yes, at stock. Board should be good for 150W without VRM airflow IIRC. It's just a bit worse than the Tomahawk.

I'd spend the $60 more for the 5700. Or are you not in the US? Cause in the US you can get 1660ti for way cheaper than those.
Of those 4 listed, if it's the Pulse and not a blower, the Vega 56 is the best deal.

3900X is generally the best for production work, even adobe premiere.
For GPU, Gamers Nexus did a comparison of GPUs for production software.

No, you're better off saving money and getting the 2600. 3600 is overkill for a lower end GPU.
Only reason to get the 3600 is that you're planning getting at least a 5700XT/1080Ti tier of GPU later for 1080p, or 2080Ti tier or better for 1440p.

Also you might want to consider switching to Davinci's resolve. Not only is it better than Premiere, but cheaper GPUs work a lot better on it. The 5700XT matches the 2080Ti and Radeon VII in it IIRC.
For Premiere? Yeah, I think so.
For Davinci's resolve and most others? No.

Not unless you're spending a lot on a 3900X already and want the absolute best performance and are going to further OC the RAM even better yourself, no.
Zen2 works perfectly fine with 3200CL16 or 3600CL18 RAM.

I'm going to build a PC with a Ryzen 7 3700X and I need help determining what motherboard I need and RAM. My current specs are:

CPU: Intel i3-6100
Motherboard: MSI B150M Mortar
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Black (2x4GB)
GPU: NVIDIA 1050ti
Case: Corsair 200R ATX
PSU: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified

I don't really play intensive games so I'm not thinking of upgrading my GPU anytime soon. I looked at motherboards such as the B450 from MSI and ASUS but I heard some bad things about MSI on this board. Not unless you're spending a lot on a 3900X already and want the absolute best performance and are going to further OC the RAM even better yourself, no.
I just want a system to work out of the box. I don't play with overclocking as it could introduce system instability so I'd rather the best performance possible without a hitch. However as much money as I'm throwing away, I don't think $200 for slightly tighter timings is worth it.

Nathaniel Hall
Nathaniel Hall

Why do you need new RAM? Are you sure you need over 8GB? I'd stick with what you have to start with and just upgrade as needed.
If it's slower RAM, just learn how to OC yourself.
not upgrading GPU
Then why are you getting the 3700X? If you're getting a 3700X you should be getting the 5700 or 2060Super bare minimum for GPU, unelss you only need a faster CPU for work and nto games.
Also, from what I understand, I need an older AMD CPU to upgrade the BIOS for the new Ryzen 3 Series.
No. Get a board which can update the BIOS without a CPU. It'll be advertised as a feature on the boards site, where you only need a USB and not CPU.

From what I've heard, the switch from Premiere to Davinci's Resolve isn't too hard.
And Davinci's Resolve is really the "defacto" video editor for the past year or two.

you have an $8500 build with the best components, why skimp out on ram for a measly $200?
for example, it could easily turn out that you'd get way better performance in your applications at 3600
and if you buy the 3200c14, you could easily set it to 3600c16 in bios, whereas the 3200c16 kit is comparatively junk

Connor Bell
Connor Bell

but I heard some bad things about MSI on this board.
Like what bad things?
Anyways a few MSI boards have something called bios flashback or something.
Let's you flash your bios.
With a 3700x you'll want a tomahawk or mortar b450. Both of those have bios flashback aswell.
Your 1050ti is extremely weak honestly and will bottleneck your CPU alot. It's probably currently bottlenecking your i3-6100
8gb is the minimum now but I've got it myself and I get by fine. Would be better to get 16gb and sell those sticks

Christian Green
Christian Green

true enough. I'll keep that in mind. Going to see what this Davinci Resolve is about. It seems to be a one time $300 fee for the program and according to that user, other GPU's perform just as well as a 2080Ti does in Adobe. Might be able to get away with just a 3950X and 5700XT instead of dual 2080Ti's.

Logan Sanchez

Best GPU to play full HD 144hz ?

Isaac Ramirez

The price of DaVinci Resolve 14 Studio is $299; down from $995. Blackmagic pointedly says that this makes it cheaper than most “annual cloud-based subscription plans”. But, somewhat incredibly, the speed increase and the Fairlight audio engine are available in the free version.
And there is a free version.

It's worth noting that Davinci's Resolve doesn't scale well with multiGPU, but it's so fast with 1 GPU that you don't need that. You'll render faster with a single 5700XT in Davinci's Resolve than you'll render with 2 2080Ti in Adobe Premiere lmao.
But if you want massive overkill, you could get a second 5700XT and I think get a ~30% improvement. Haven't seen tests, but I'm just guessing just due to how encoding works and how big the diminishing returns are.
Imo it'd make more sense to just wait and see if AMD makes an even more powerful GPU, or workstation card which might have 16GB-32GB of VRAM, and upgrade to that later rather than add in a 2nd card and just use the single 5700XT until then.

Level1techs did some 3900X, 9900k, 2080ti, and 5700XT davinci's resolve and premiere benchmarks, too.
youtu.be/JfEjU8Zx9Ps?t=294
Massively better with DNxHR, slightly slower with Cineform.
For some reason they didn't test the 3900X in some of these.

Premiere comes later. 3900X+5700XT roughly matches the 3900X+2080Ti there.
You can see 3900XT+5700XT with DNxHR
So either way, you're probably getting a 3950X+5700XT system unless you want to get the 2080Ti for literally a ~1% difference in the best case.

Get a better case.
Pay $20 more for the 1TB version of that SSD at Google Express.

I'm pretty sure the thermal paste was put on just fine and the cooler itself is solidly mounted, meshify c has pretty decent airflow, but yeah it is like 80 degrees in this room so that probably has something to do with it. Still, I am pretty sure something is up. Every time temperature hits around 53 it immediately spikes up to around 61 as the voltage shoots to 1.45 out of nowhere.
