i have a laptop from 2005 which i don't use for anything contemporary anymore, it's likely old enough to have drivers for 98SE/ME list of must-have late-90's/early-00's games?, not the most obvious ones, but i have a poor memory. preferably underrated ones that i can't easily find on old lists also, general go-to tools and unofficial patches for using win9x in 2019? (not concerned with things like browsers, i have a newer (... 2008) laptop for that)
Jaxson Johnson
so i'm getting kinda bored with Linux after using it for a few weeks. I like it, and everything works well but I miss certain programs that only exist for Windows and I can't be bothered fucking around with Wine and shit to get basic old games to run. HOWEVER, I don't want to use Win 10. Is there a telemetry free, debloated version of Win 7 available anywhere? I just want an .iso that I can put on a USB and install without needing to debloat everything myself. Should I just install the POS Ready ISO? How much fucking around do I have to do to disable the telemetry bullshit?
Luis Kelly
I asked a couple threads but no one replied and Google hasn't been much help,
Is there any way on Windows 10 to delete the content of the C:\Program Files\WindowsApp folder? It's grown to nearly 30Gb despite me having never used any of the window store's apps, and my C: drive is starting to run out of space

How do bash shells on Windows work? If I cave and get Windows on my next machine can I still just type sudo shudown -p +120 when I want to go to bed watching a movie and have it turn off automatically

Those are literally all apps that are either not installed at all (like there are dozens of folders named "HiddenCityMysteryofShadows" but no such game anywhere on the computer) or apps that are on the computer but which Windows isn't letting me uninstall (like all the Xbox shit)
i like these threads more than the majority of Jow Forums these days theres a good mix here of spyware awareness but not also being so freefag that it hurts your productivity and makes you snobby just a bunch of boomers tweaking windows into doing what it does best without the bloat and orwell shit, like old times

I'm gonna install Win 7 POS Ready. What are the essential steps to debloating and debotnetting?

It uses the same updates as WES7, so there are no telemetry updates to avoid. Personally I would use WES7 in the first place (or even Thin PC depending on your machine age) but maybe you don't have the time to pick and choose components (but it is very easy using the image builder wizard). POSReady has stuff like all the dot nets which I avoid (lots of updates), plus media player components. But like I said if you have a modern enough machine you may not notice the difference.
Blake Jackson
I'm gonna run it on a Thinkpad T430, so I guess it should be fine. I wasn't aware that POS Ready had no telemetry updates, that's a relief. I guess i'll just remove all the shitty bloat software it comes with and leave it at that then. Cheers.

Does anyone have some high res versions of the stock XP wallpapers? I can find Bliss in every resolution imaginable but the others remain elusive
Austin Sullivan
bliss is just a professional photographers' photo, not edited in any way, i don't recall any other XP wallpaper that wasn't either computer generated, or heavily edited, so there probably isn't better quality versions of those around
Colton Bailey
I swear my grandmother had the only working version of Windows ME in existence.
Tyler Watson
Unfortunate. Think they'd look okay if I ran them through a program to increase the resolution? I've never done anything like that before, but I'd imagine that someone else out there is looking for them too
A computer from 2001 may have drivers for Win 9x around. Anything newer is a crap shoot. Fun little tip: Win ME for whatever reason can only take 512mb ram. (which back then was seen as overkill) However Win 98SE can take 1GB ram. Also ME is the only 9x version that had basic generic mass storage drivers baked in (Flash/USB sticks). This was not really touted cause at the time USB sticks were expensive as hell and only had like 128/256mb capacity. Sometimes a NT 2000 driver will work with 9x due to the shared driver model they use. ME was more of an experiment by MS more than anything else. They were trying to merge the NT and 9x lines and used ME as a test bed before they rolled out a proper release. (XP)
Owen Brooks
Cool, thanks. Looking for a program to try and create high res versions now, I'll post if it's successful
Bentley Bell
That last line is just BS
Microsoft wanted to switch over from the DOS kernel (Win 9x) to the NT kernel (2000/XP) because it obviously was the future. Whoever software compatibility was still an issue, so after Windows 2000 (NT kernel) was released, they still wanted to offer an alternative, thus basically ported some features from Win 2000 over to Windows 98 and called it ME.
Cooper Thomas
do you think that a program like bleachbit is useful?
Christopher Smith
yep, they were working on a home version of 2000 back in 1999 i suppose they weren't happy with consumer application support for NT yet though ME was a stop-gap from the beginning, it's proposed replacement predates it
yes but you should be aware they (bleachbit) dont release new versions often, which has led to falling behind implementing/updating cleaning routines for modern browsers...worst case is it doesnt clean something properly
Dylan Lee
ok, to be honest I always uncheck browser cleaning because I delete everything when closing the window. anyway, is there a list of recommended files to remove?
Colton Smith
Is it possible to still remove windows defender on 1903 without breaking anything? I kinda want to use 1903 instead of LTSC but maybe optimize it a little.
Carter Sullivan
Can we get an already compiled LTSC .iso with the optimizations? This shit takes too long to compile.

The difference is that the evaluation version is locked down and prevents you from running a certain number pf programs while multitasking.

If this weren't bad enough, this behaviour still occurs after Cortana is fully disabled/uninstalled. It's speculated that the purpose of this function to build up a massive voice database, then tie those voices to identities, and eventually be able to identify anyone simply by picking up their voice, whether it be a microphone in a public place or a wiretap on a payphone. Interestingly, if Cortana is enabled, the voice is first transcribed to text, then the transcription is sent to: pre.footprintpredict.com reports.wes.df.telemetry.microsoft.com df.telemetry.microsoft.com
While the inital reflex may be to block all of the above servers via HOSTS, it turns out this won't work: Microsoft has taken the care to hardcode certain IPs, meaning that there is no DNS lookup and no HOSTS consultation. However, if the above servers are blocked via HOSTS, Windows will pretend to be crippled by continuously throwing errors, while still maintaining data collection in the background. Other than an increase in errors, HOSTS blocking did not affect the volume, frequency, or rate of data being transmitted.
ALL BUILT IN THE OS AND CANNOT BE DISABLED.

No it's not. Not for the actual download to 8.1 Embedded Pro. No matter, though; I found it on archives.org & have matching checksums from MS sources.

hm, seems like The Eye no longer hosts these isos.
Second method, in case that other one fails: 1) disable fast startup 2) boot your pc with a linux liveUSB (something like LinuxMint will do) 3) from that live session, look for that folder and delete whatever you want.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could recommend a good book on windows. I'm using win10, and I'd like to pick up some reading on it. I'm reading 'how linux works' from no starch press and something similar for windows would be great I'm just too amateur to know what a good starting point for getting to know windows more deeply might be.
Recommendations appreciated.
Alexander Stewart
I'm not very Jow Forums and trying to extract an svf for LTSC, I have everything in a folder and I'm at .\smv x -br . but cmd tells me '.\smv' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. even though I have smartvision installed and the filename put in when I run the command

I wasn't, thanks user, didn't even know you could do that
He can't. He's just a sperglord trying to derail a thread, without researching the existence of anti-telemetry utilities.
No problem. Keep in mind that the Windows terminal can be just as useful as the Linux terminal, even though Microsoft did their best to not have you depend on it for the most trivial tasks.

This. All these anjeets are fucking delusional. I’ll stick to my iPhone for a long time with all telemetry disabled, ad blocker and iCloud off thank you.

The best part that people don't realise is that Windows has its own self-repairing functionality.
If you have issues with default Windows software acting buggy for some shitty reason, just open a command prompt & type "sfc /scannow" (this will scan for any base OS software that has cone corrupt & reinstall it from cabinet files available in C:\Windows\system32 & C:\Windows\sysWOW64).
I need to look into what Linux or BSD projects have self-healing capabilities like this.
Angel Stewart
most package managers handle configs and packages separately, thus reinstalling a package essentially does almost this, except is a bit more expensive
Brandon Phillips
Right, but if a major component of the Linux kernel were to break, is there any self-healing functionality that can compare to, or exceed, Windows' sfc /scannow command?
