Back when they did it it I don't think it was such a big deal since the industry was a bit of a wild west still.
Also "IBM designers chose this arrangement at least in part because it allowed the laptop's ThinkLight to be turned on in the dark simply by feeling for the keys in two of the keyboard's corners" according to wikipedia. That is actually pretty handy.
