NATO has bases surrounding Russia, Russia has influence in the Balkans where the EU is now opting for an aggressive inclusion policy, Ukraine is a failed mission that Russia has partly absorbed, Turkey and the west are at each other's throats over Syria and the East Med where Russia has clearly stated their position. There is very evident and clear stated competition on all sides.
