There are different stories and reasons behind the specific Europeans that came tot he Americas, but for the Germans they were near-entirely people who were forced to leave their homes because they lost their means of income to either industrialization or overpopulation growth, and due to the overall backwardness of the the German states. There was no enlightenment going on in Germany during this period; it was run like a Junker's landed estate and took 80 years to unify.
