I taught in India. Sports unless it's cricket are really looked down on as it doesn't guarantee a stable future. Majority of the people there are very poor and would rather their children either work or get educated and have a decent job to make a living. There almost no emphasis on sports as a career as it is seen as a dead-end. Also die to government negligence and corruption they have a very underdeveloped sports infrastructure
