Honestly I don't think that's him being necessarily defensive. But more, just tired of stereotypes. I get the same way in some cases, as i'm from rural deep south, which is probably the most stereotyped area in the USA.
But I get where he's coming from, most people in the first/second world grow up believing that places like Africa are still primitive societies that live in tribes and shit, but in reality they're really not much different than the USA, just less access to stuff.

These graphs take into account that mortality rates will fall with access to better health care but not considering the historical precedent that birth rates fall with access to health care as well.
