Trump actually was right in a way that was actually implicit. Most developed countries and heavy weights of the world are expected to have freer markets if they want to be a part of the world and receive a fair treatment.
At the same time, developed countries are willing to accept developing and underdeveloped countries to have heavy fees on imports and lax laws on exports. Developing countries are incredibly more dependent on exports than developed ones. And that's why this "trade war" exempted all the developed countries with free economies, and developing countries with protectionist policies.
And effectively, Chinese officials said that they'd consider lowering the import fees they have everywhere.

Where does Argentina stand at this?

Did they?

What China says and what China does are two separate things.

Also, China is a developing country and we did not exempt India.

Road safety laws

We're a developing shithole and the American Government did in fact say they'd consider exempting us. Same for Brazil, Canada, and Mexico and the EU. Now this is temporary and has some strings attached and some paperwork has to take place first but eh

Yeah, but they're inserting themselves heavily into world trade, without letting other countries sell stuff to them. They might be developing, but even then they're heavy weights. It makes sense the US would demand some kind of reciprocity with import-export policies. And India was not exempt because this "trade war" focused on iron and steel primarily, and India is not a major steel producer to begin with, so it doesn't really affect them in the first place.
The major steel suppliers for the US are Canada, a country with a free market, and Brazil, a developing country.
And you bet that the US will demand that Brazil drops its protectionist policies when they develop some more.
But you're right, take whatever China says with a grain of salt.

That's not very impressive.

Do we even have to? A country with 30%+ of it's economy dependant on us buying 'cheap chink shit', importing over half of their foodstuff, domestic foodstuff filled with heavy metals, environment polluted beyond all comprehension, entire cities that will develop communal cancer in 10 years, countless separatists groups and polluted/disappearing water resources.
China will collapse, it's just a question of time.
