We have very high rates of social mobility, though there is a small entitled group of people born into succes that will be succesful no matter what.
Michael Bell
>Is there an upper class of people who attend the same kind of private schools and then attend the elite universities and work in the best jobs etc? yes same here
Jaxon Butler
it's a republic so no classes
Alexander Flores
My brother works for Oxford Uni. and he said there is another lad working on his floor coming from a poor area in London.
The lad said he has never thought he could work there because of his background.
Joseph Cook
not really, most people just attend the public school in their area. a lot of parents (both middle and upper) have started putting their children in private schools though because of retarded new laws and white flight. i don't think we have any elite universities
Luke Wood
>Is there an upper class of people who attend the same kind of private schools and then attend the elite universities and work in the best jobs etc?
these people here are kinda locked down upon.
Pupils who attend private schools are either 2 stupib or show other signs of behavioral disorder
Leo Phillips
Kek, you have a bigger class divide and worse social mobility than the UK.
Hudson Anderson
The only people that are really like that here are the religious fanatics from Opus Dei. Turboconservatives.
David Campbell
The Oxbridge Unis are quite egalitarian, it's not like it was even 20 or 30 years ago. Private schooling is a different matter altogether though.
Dominic Anderson
I went to an elite uni in the UK for almost 2 years, and fuck me are those elitist cunts douchebags. Most of them will barely even interact with you if they know you're poor or low-class.
Chase King
I went to Oxford, and the classes might be kind of egalitarian. But try joining a society or organisation without the right connections and background. You'll never get a good position.
Ryan Murphy
They are not. Massive amounts of pupils belong to the (Global) elite. They just present themselves as egalitarian and the students happily participate.
Joseph Morgan
How do they distinguish themselves in the Netherlands?
I know you guys have royalty, but are there private schools etc which keep people on top?
Is it mostly racial in Chile? e.g. light-skinned people being the top class like in a lot of brown countries?
Josiah Nguyen
I'm from Sweden but I believe Finland is largely the same.
It's mostly just wealth that determines class. People nowadays believe in a low-middle-high class system, but it's really poorly defined. The government has tried to push the "classless society" narrative for a few decades, but nowadays it's more real to people than it's been in a long time.
There is some remnants of the old nobility and who posses certain characteristics like special names that include 'von' or 'af', inherited wealth and estates and the like. They group together and are very cliquey, but they have no legal benefits.
Nathan Barnes
Unless you are in big cities the upper and middle and lower classes here are usually pretty geographically separated.
Cameron Cruz
Around 50% of Oxford students are privately educated (7% of UK are privately educated).
But even the ones who weren't tend to come from top grammar schools, i.e. grammar schools in areas where the only people who can afford to live locally are high-earners.
I guess that's the way of the world though. I'm not trying to push quotas etc.
Liam King
Upper class culture gets shit on here. Being wealthy is fine, but the superiority complex isn't allowed.
Where in the UK everyone wants to be a part of some elite club, in Aus politicians try to do everything they can to look more working class.
David Stewart
How come you went to Oxford, and why only two years?
Zachary Perry
Same at least for the politician part. They all wanna seem like your neighbor hence going by their first names on their campaigns.
Hunter Nguyen
I did a Mst there, I wanted to study more but I could barely afford 1-2 years. I studied in Belgium for 3 years and it costed me about 1500 euro in tuition. 1 year in the UK costed me 20k (college fees and tuition).
Fuck me, the UK should fix its education.
Nolan Reyes
OP here. Thanks for the amazing response to my question.
Would anybody be interested in reading a brief story about how I almost became a member of Britain's socio-economic elite?
Zachary Wright
Yea alright
Juan Taylor
Yeah the education system in Britain is a huge scam. I regret going to university. It's what happens when a country sells its people out IMO.
Adrian Howard
Not going to be doing a bit about education, but more about the upper-class stuff expresses itself in France.
France's is a well-combined mold of old aristocracy, and bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie usually comes in phases (pre-Revolutionary, Restauration period, and Second Empire -> that's my family I guess), but being an "older" sort of bourgeoisie doesn't matter much since ever family has interbred so much. Lots of people will know each other, or be the friend of the friend in that group, making it a bit tight-knit. Nothing like the UK though.
Anyways, here "elite" bourgeois usually go down a path that lets them at a business school/engineering schools, or be a doctor or lawyer. The school matters a lot, and even these upper-class students will reneg a chance to study at Harvard or such, because in France, HEC or Mines will beat Harvard.
To cultivate upper-class familiarity, the youth is taken to parties between each other, called "rallyes". It's an opportunity for you to mingle, get to know what might be your future associates, and meet nice girls if you intend to keep it in the bourgeois family. My family isn't strictly "bourgeois"; but my mother knows people, so my little brother attends these kind of parties pretty regularly. Everyone wears tuxedos, and instead of hard liquor, there's only champagne and good wines. Very snobby all around, but probably a great learning experience. Like I said, it allows for great familiarity between up-and-coming upper class members.
Hope that was interesting. >pic related as one of the rallye parties
Very much so. I don't want to be the only one ranting here.
Josiah Rodriguez
We have some oligarchs, but they attend YOUR schools and universities and their families life there. Besides everyone else is poor
Benjamin Barnes
Copenhagen Business School is on par with good British unis when it comes to business I think.
Jaxon Butler
The Netherlands is so anti-elitist that most of our elite goes abroad to study in the UK since they get to be with their kind there.
Connor Moore
I forgot to mention, if you're the cream of the cream, you'll be attending public high-schools, but in high-income areas that are renowned for great placement.
Examples are lycée Hoche, lycée Henri IV, lycée Stanislas, lycée Sainte Geneviève.
David Campbell
We have the same. Public highschools where rich people are willing to kill for to get their kids in with like 1% immigrants despite being in Amsterdam.
Ryan Gray
You need a good ol revolution Behead the oligarchs
Jaxon Long
Here we have very affluent public schools in the very wealthy areas too but I think the difference is that people that live there simply get to go there because that's where they live. Sounds like they have to be admitted in your cunt.
Julian Hill
here it does really NOT matter to what highschool you went. kinda laughable desu
I mean what do you even learn at school? nothing compared to university
Jaxon Perry
There aren't supposed to be any classes but it's the Party nomenclatura that gets all the nicest houses from the state, they're always at the top on the waiting lists for cars, computers and so on..
If you don't support the Party you can't get a job, you will have to settle for the UBI only, you can't criticise the CPI in public, then the laws against counter revolutionary and revisionist propaganda make everything very difficult for you, if you criticise the Party you are basically fucked because then you are stamped a reactionary and people don't want to affiliate with you, and you can't own a gun or publish books.
>be me >born into a nice four-bedroom home around 30 minutes away from a medium-sized city >family falls apart by the time I'm 5 or 6 >father and older brother move out >sister moves away >raised by single mother in my grandma's house and then in a small terrace >severely depressed mum works minimum wage and I go to local comp >still have the pressure to behave as though we still had money, rather than acting like local pleb kids >go to university to study a shit-tier subject >move back home afterwards to my mum's partner's house but can't find a job >move to London to live in a box room rented to me by my older sister >work two minimum wage jobs (bar work and agency work) >briefly date an extremely wealthy girl for two weeks (that's another story) >get a full-time job after ~5 months of applying everywhere, doing cringe-tier recruiting videos, barely making rent etc >earn £20k and commute over 2 hours per day >move out and live in one of several slum-tier flats I have lived in in inside immigrant ghettos >be summer 2015 >I'm ~23 >trying as best I can to gtfo of London >be the quiet weird guy in the office, no friends, spend every weekend walking around alone all day >be angry and isolated >suddenly another company moves into my office building >they use our office to print shit out, make coffee and have meetings >they are all pretty young, and all privately educated (as are my co-workers) >one of them is a girl who I don't notice at first >first time I really notice her I'm walking down the stairs to leave at 5:30pm, ready to commute an hour to a room I can barely afford >she is standing with her co-worker and says in a really angry but well-articulated voice "she can't keep leaving at five-thirty, this is London!" >figure she's talking about the intern at their company >feel embarrassed since I am leaving at that time so she is practically shit-talking me >don't really care as I don't know her, so just stare at the ground and pass
Yup, Hoche is Versailles, so exclusive to rich-fags. Geneviève is I don't remember exactly where, but the rich outskirts of Paris. And Stanislas and Henri IV are where it's most expensive to live.
Honestly there are immigrants here in those, but only rich sons of African ambassadors or dictators and such, and that aren't half too retarded.
It's the pride of the school if it can get foreign stidents with presitigious backgrounds and they can stand the rigorous training.
Charles Wood
>waiting list for computers
Where are you from?
Brandon Robinson
It's similar here. Our public schools are zoned, so only people living within certain neighborhoods can be admitted. If you live in a wealthier neighborhood, then your public school will be comparable with private schools in terms of quality. My mum even lied about our address so I could go to a better secondary school.
Gabriel Hill
What's going on, man? Are you writing from an alternate universe where a proletarian revolution happened in Iceland?
Jeremiah Foster
No they have other tricks to keep you out like demanding parents to do a voluntary donation worth €1k for school trips and in general things like that filter themselves out. Immigrants have no interest in sending their kids to a school in a very wealthy neighborhood on the other part of town. These schools are surrounded by houses that cost €1 million and up, so all the rich families already live there,
Samuel Hernandez
You have to contact with plebs in regular school though
Leo Harris
Top of the waiting lists for computers?
David Reyes
It does matter. Some highschools have like 40% pupils going to university while others maybe 10%.
For your employer it won’t matter but it says a lot about your socio-economic background and chances in life
Nathaniel Cruz
Part 1? Or did you almost become rich when you dated that girl?
Robert Garcia
I thought you fags had gymnasiums and hauptschules and all that which can really determine the course of your life
Daniel Russell
Yes you have to wait but they're free Iceland
Evan Taylor
yeah you are right.
in the 60s all the terroni and turd children were automatically send to their fate to Hauptschule
Jace Lee
Can you go to a university after Hauptschule or are you fucked?
Caleb Williams
Merci user. That was really interesting.
John Collins
We have it too but the first 2 years you can switch between levels multiple times per year. I had plenty of classmates in 2nd year that came from retard school and a few were send there (I was in Gymnasium). Also after graduation you can always go a level up and graduate there. This is insanely popular. 2 girls I know are 20 and only graduated highschool this year because they first completed ‘hauptschule’ then ‘realschule’ and then ‘gymnasium’ which is their way into university
Tyler Powell
I think you can, but you need another extra year to catch up or something. And your results need to prove you can be up for it.
He'll explain it better than I can.
Grayson Gutierrez
You are free to complete a higher level of highschool after completing hauptschule. I had people in my graduation year that were 21 and worked their way up from Hauptschule
Lucas Hughes
Sorry, yes, part 1. I will try to keep it brief.
>at my desk shortly after >she approaches and says "hey!" to get my attention >look up and into her eyes >oh my god >instant feeling of overwhelming attraction which made me feel emotions, yearnings and feelings of excitement I had never felt (that intensely) when I looked in her eyes >I had always (and still) maintained that the eyes are for me the most attractive feature of any human being, especially girls >I'm sure my pupils dilated, and she looked down at me with a big smile which made my heart absolutely race >instantly know that this girl is someone I could love, protect, cherish and adore >the feeling is so pure, so transcendent of bodily desires (plus, I could only see her head and shoulders from where I was sitting), so delicate and came out of nowhere, triggering an intense positive emotional response during a period when nothing could break through my gloomy worldview and general unhappiness >I probably only looked at her for about 3 seconds but it felt like several minutes, or as though my brain had deliberately slowed down my perception so that I could truly appreciate her appearance and disposition: brown shoulder-length hair, big round hazel eyes, a thin pale face, a cute smile which seemed on the verge of becoming a naughty smirk - obviously someone who is refined, sensitive, cute (rather than "sexy" or "hot"), rather shy >she asks me to help her find some stationary >I rarely had reason to talk and have always been very silent and thus struggle to talk when necessary >I say "oh, ok" and get up and hurriedly try to help her >squat down and look through some cabinets but no luck >I can't find the thing she's after so I ask my co-worker, who stands up and helps her >I rush back to my seat and pretend to be busy, my heart racing
Caleb Myers
Where I grew up in small town Kansas there were definitely different classes. We had solidly middle class suburbs, working class suburbs and the town was surrounded on all sides in the outskirts with trailer parks. People in hs formed cliques but they never ever had anything to do with class. Ever. Some kids were into sports and other into vidiya and other liked metal music or whatever they call it. People who lived in nice suburbs behaved just like kids from the trailer parks. Not to say they acted stupid or intentionally uneducated but everyone just speaks and acts in the general boring way. You wouldn't really know someone even came from a trailer park without asking. So at least where I live class divides are basically invisible.
Liam Reyes
you can, there are many ways now. was a different story some decades ago
you can do a special test that proves your abilities, or have experience in your field, or redo the university entrance certificate, or do a special admission test or......
It's far from impossible but you have to put up some effort
Do you get to pick your subjects in your final years, or is there some standard curriculum that every student has to do?
I only started uni at 21, it's nice to know there are Europeans doing the same shit
David Parker
here it is less class, more like ethnic Germans vs Kanaken
Ethan Sanders
We have ‘profiles’ as we call them. A set of subjects like the STEM profile, economics and culture. Everyone has the same subjects in the first 2 or 3 years depending on your level of highschool. Then you pick your profile with sometimes room for a free choice. Maths, Dutch and English are compulsory.
Christian Taylor
Even the royalty themselves go to public schools. Everyone goes to public schools and arrives by bike when in high school and literally almost all unis are public and statefunded.
Juan Taylor
Willem Alexander and most of his siblings studied in the UK
Luis Hill
when's the "fancy a shag mate" part
Isaac Collins
Also these profiles allow relatively dumb people to get into uni as the culture profile includes drawing and low level maths. Many people in my class that shouldnt be in uni managed to get in that way.
Joshua Butler
How do rural children reach their schools?
Are there busses?
I imagine biking is easy since the Netherlands is so flat.
Christian Jenkins
I was talking about high school desu, Amalia is going to a public high school and all three daughters went/are going to a public elementary school. W-A also studied in Leiden btw
Cooper Lee
>elementary school In Wassenaar where the median value of a house is €700k Lol
Dylan Carter
Literally sounds like communism.
Juan Watson
I cycled to school for 30 minutes (8km). Some classmates had to bike for 45 minutes.
Jacob Martinez
That elementary school is still a public school. I live in a small city in Noord-Holland, can't tell you about the rural area but I had some classmates back in elementary school cycling 30 min. to get to school
Brody Lewis
That's pretty cool. Are the roads designed in such a way as to accommodate this?
In my area growing up I couldn't really do this without risking getting run over by a car speeding around a corner.
Jordan Price
>implying high school math has anything to do with intelligence >implying high school math has anything to do with actual math
Jaxson Baker
Most undergraduate math has nothing to do with actual math either
Jayden Nguyen
>road design Yes absolutely. It’s illegal for bikes to share a road with cars when the speed limit is above 50km/h so outside of towns this means there is always a bike lane seperated from the road. On top of that they would always make this bike path snow and ice free
Nathaniel Martin
I legit have no idea, I've been told my family was quite rich (200k+ income per year) but I went to a regular public school and uni for engineering.
But there are lolnoengineeringjobs in Canada so I'll be poor anyhow wwwwwww.
Connor Smith
The Netherlands seems like a cute country, almost like Japan in my imagination. It's a shame about the Turks, Surinamers etc flooding in.
Anthony Bailey
To add. It wasn’t cool. I was a bit isolated from most of my friends and was sentenced to hang out with the retards from my village. If I wanted to meet someone I had to cycle through rain or storm. Nobody wanted to visit my house because of how far away it was. It’s not as cute as you think it is. Much like Britain it is grey and dull but at least you have nice landscapes. We have nothing but farms
Hunter Torres
Pretty much the same situation but I got an even more meme degree
>engineers do nothing but meme about their starting wage and job opportunities when they graduate >they're actually unemployed like everyone else I feel for you
Jason Reed
According to American posters the only people that make money are ‘just do a trade lol I earn 150k per minute’
Carson Nelson
I decided to try to go the family connections route, but in talking with them I discovered they were actually in the same position in this city when they started out, and they all started their own businesses. I'm having a go at that, but they all started it before all the regulations on engineers that the governments passed recently.
Fucking boomers making it impossible to do anything.
Certain trades are ridiculously employable here too But who wants to work themselves to death by the time they're 50?
Jace Roberts
Here is the average life cycle of an Elite individual in Great Britain:
>born to wealthy parents >attend a boarding school (~35,000 euros per year) with children of other wealthy parents in an all-white rural town >attend Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick, Edinburgh or one of the major London unis >graduate and maybe dick around a while trying to be "creative" >go into finance, law, insurance in London >meet someone from a similar background at a dinner party or some social event intended for people of your background >live in London until you're ~35 >buy a large house in a semi-rural area within an hour of London >commute to your high-paying job >have kids and send them to the same boarding schools >rinse >repeat
Nicholas Jenkins
Is this why every British actor and comedian seems to have gone to Oxford or Cambridge, despite not being that intelligent or good at anything? Seriously, some British TV shows might as well be an alumni meet up for the cast given how similar their educational backgrounds are.
Aiden Phillips
British tv is all kickstarted by the BBC which is full of sirs and wealthy families.
Connor White
Also why politics are dumb pieces of shit despite having elite education. It's just a huge circlejerk.
Carter Lewis
>Grandmother was the daughter of a banker from an upper class british family >Ran off after the war when she was 16 with some demobbed polish soldier to fucking Canada >I'm a poor loser living in my parent's basement This is why it's important to stay inside the class system ladies and gentlemen.
Just a wealth divide, but even the "poor" here can live relatively comfortable lives. Our divide is closer to places like Norway or Germany than the UK or US.
Nicholas Stewart
Yes, many people in the arts have said it's more elitist today than ever. I know from personal experience how people in the arts have benefited from connections they later make no mention of.
I think part of it is because selling "Britain TM" to the world involves having well-spoken gentlemen and ladies which appeal to people who think Britain is like Harry Potter, when really it's like The Office (UK).
These people tend to be shameless also, preaching integration, multiculturalism etc while staying as far away from the consequences (immigrant ghettos, schools full of Muslims, etc) as they can. I think it's partly due to an overbearing sense of entitlement ("why shouldn't I correct the opinions of the lower orders!?") and partly due to guilt (e.g. Emma Watson preaching feminism and multiculturalism, Cumberbatch demanding refugees be allowed into the country) as they realize how easy they've had it and instead of treating it as a class issue they see it as a race and / or gender issue.
Logan Brooks
I actually don't disagree with you. One of the reasons I didn't "make a move" on the girl from the upper class who I had a huge crush on. I would have just ended up dragging her down to my pleb-tier existence.
Ian Moore
>tfw go to the gas station and get chided for straying from the Party line
education is free, univercity students are from all social classes rich kids who don't pass the entrance exam mostly go to other european unis
Jayden Allen
Do you think it's mainly because of centrelink? Here there is no general cash welfare system but a patchwork of various welfare programs and if you fall through the cracks you are pretty fucked.
Michael Parker
>grandfathers family are all poor semi-serfs in Northern-Netherlands >some move to Canada to start a peach farm >they are rich beyond imagination now >I’m still a europoor
