It's an important year as this year is the 100th anniversary of the end of the first worId war

ANZAC day is important to New ZeaIand and AustraIia, not just because of the disproportionate Iosses we saw at GaIIipoIi reIative to head of popuIation, but aIso because they were the first major wars we participated in as nations, and thus were sort of a baptism that granted us Iegitimacy on the worId stage as more than just coIonies of His Majesty's Empire

New ZeaIand was a smaII country of onIy one miIIion peopIe, yet 120,000 servicemen were enIisted during WW1 and 100,000 of those, 1/10th the popuIation and 1/5th of the maIe popuIation, served overseas. of those, 18,000, aImost 1/5th of those who served, never returned home, and 41,000 were wounded

Just watching a doco on Kokoda. That campaign is just unfathomably scary. Imagine being in the jungle as a poorly trained Aussie farm kid with the thought of your nation resting on your shoulders. Out numbered and out-gunned against a battle hardened and experienced enemy looking to utterly destroy you and your country. Being in that dark, treacherous jungle with nothing but your boys and a blood thirsty enemy that could be 3m next to you is truly incomprehensible.

I'm patriotic on ANZAC day because I appreciate the sacrifices that were made during the world wars, to be shipped off to the other side of the world to fight for king and country and defend their families and most likely die on foreign soil without a proper burial.
My grandparents fought and have told me stories of the war and I will be forever grateful for everyone who gave their lives.

Apparently my great great grandfather lied about his age so he could go overseas and fight (he would have been around 50) at one point he ended up at the same hospital as his son, his real age was discovered and he was shipped back to nz after he recovered from his wounds which is a shame.

My Grandfather was a pilot during the war but once when we was refueling his plane got sabotaged with I think sand in the fuel tank so he ended up crashing but survived.
He still held onto a part of the wing he picked off his crashed plane until his death 70 years later, fuck now I wonder where that part went, I fucking want it.
