From what I know, so-called "Messenger" prohibited it not because it is haram or something like that, or because his Allah (who pretty much existed only in his head) told him so. The reason was that contemporary artist mocked Mohamed for his lies etc. And since he couldn't deal with it in some reasonable way, he decided to ban it.
Also, about that part "Generally, it is prohibited to depict animate things"; take Persia or present Iran for example. In Persia there was a tradition of depicting humans in various miniatures. And also there were/are some good artists. Check works of Iman Maleki; really remarkable artist.
