What country in Latin America should I visit and why? The main contenders so far are Mexico or Colombia, but I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Mexico and Peru are the best for Precolombian sites

Colombia and Cuba are the best for Colonial architecture

Mexico and Peru are the best for the landscapes.

why visit latin america? you're already living there

Argentina and Chile for Patagonia. Buenos Aires is beautiful as well.

Depends on what you want, for party Cuba or DR, Riviera Maya was popular few years ago, Peru could be an option if you like pre-hispanic cultures and all that, the only interesting place in Colombia to me could be Cartagena

bump

>the only interesting place in Colombia to me could be Cartagena
There are hundreds of interesting places, Cartagena just happens to be the most promoted destiantion abroad. The countryside specifically to me is amazing

It depends on what you want. I guess for an American, Colombia would be more exotic.

This is the best answer. Also:
-Brazil and Uruguay if you want beaches.
-Argentina, Brazil and Chile if you want big cities.

If you are the average gringo, you'll be comfortable in Costa Rica or Panama

Colombia is one of the least exotic places for an American in Latin America. Maybe only Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Panama and Mexico are less exotic for an American than Colombia

There's aren't any noticeable differences between Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica though, you could put them on the same level. Puerto Rico is basically part of America so technically it shouldn't even be considered among the places you mentioned either. On the other hand, Americans definitely experience less of a culture shock in Mexico mainly because they're neighbors and the natural exchange between them is much higher. In general, the farther geographically you are the more of a culture shock you'll experience and the more the exotic factor comes into play. Us, being quite geographically close to them, have a lot of things in common. All of our urban areas have received strong significant american influence. Add to that the fact that more than 1 million of Colombians live in the US and married american citizens. these people send remittances back home and in a lot of cases have second homes down here. Same applies to the Caribbean as a whole (Especially the Dominican Republic) and Central America. It's jut plain obvious that everything is more similar to America here, Mesoamerica or the Caribbean basin than in farther places like say, Brazil or Uruguay

panama and costa rica are basically american colonies

Not even close. Hundreds o thousands of Colombian expats live in Panama, lots of them owning large tracts of real estate and playing an active role in the Panamanian economy. Same applies to Costa Rica but to a lesser degree. Anyway, the American influence in those countries is nowhere close to the customs and similarities we all share in common

Man wtf you talking about, he just asked where to go, why you talking about real state

tb.h, I don't know why I got so derailed. I was trying to point out that the differences between Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia are negligible.

>he just asked where to go
Depend on what he is looking for. native culture: Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala.
mix Euro centric and native latin culture: the southern Cone
A mix of Euro, Native and African Latin cultures: Brazil, Colombia, the Caribbean
The least culture shock: Mexico, Puerto Rico
