I'm trying to learn Japanese through Duolingo. Why do so many characters look the same? For example, "ro" is ろ, while "ru" is る. So, I think, maybe the "3" shape means "r", and something about that loop in "ru" makes it have an "u" sound. But there are other lookalikes that don't add up - "ku" is く, and "gu" is ぐ. Why is it the same but with those little dashes? Duolingo only teaches me to remember how each symbol sounds, not why they look that way.
