Those imperial needed to cut ties to colonies RIGHT AWAY. Dissent was fermenting faster then ever before and actually treating the colonies like equals would be completely financial unviable. Try basically doing infrastructure, education ,healthcare from scratch more or less, metropole citizens would get angry at the loss of their budget to the colonies and most likely loss of voting power+ entitlements in the colonies.
