Ecotourism is more advanced and exploited in Costa Rica. So if you like that you can find that in both Countries but Costa Rica would be the best for that. Panama has the canal, the shopping centers, and the cultural stuff like the polleras, the diablico susicos, the Casco Antiguo, etc.

If 1989 is very recently, yes. But remember that it was far from that before the 80s. A decade of a dictator been permissive with narcotraffickers hardly defines Panamanian history.
