I live in downtown Toronto, my place of work is ~1200 m from where I live, I use my legs or the bus. I make 98k/year before taxes. Good luck getting that arrangement in the countryside because you can't.

I wouldn't be so sure. We're never building with that aesthetic and materials again, but we're building it in form, increasingly.
As energy costs increase (especially as the developing world grows AND uses more energy per capita) it's an increasingly-wise investment to build non-sprawl stuff.

People are finding all kinds of ways to build it. These townhomes use recycled shipping containers. Keeps costs low in a place where the land value is super expensive.
