From late 2013 onwards, when you sign-up for a new contract with an ISP for home broadband, they will block certain categories of websites by default unless you ask them to stop. I think you can also disable it in your router settings too. The categories are porn, alcohol, drugs, gambling, dating (seriously), violence, self-harm/suicide, hacking & piracy, hate speech, etc.
If you're on mobile broadband, then all these categories and more are blocked too. I can't go on certain Jow Forums boards including Jow Forums on my mobile data because of it. To unblock on this, you have to go into the phone network shop and show them your passport or driving license so they can unblock it for you as you are 18+. You can also use a credit card and pay a £1 fee or whatever for them to unblock adult websites too. Has to be credit, not a debit card.
Porn used to be completely illegal in the UK and it was the only democracy in the Western world to be like that. The Obscene Publications Act 1959 kept hardcore porn illegal all the way until the 1990s. The Video Recordings Act 1984 made it so the BBFC had to censor all nudity and that before it could be released. So porn was illegal on VHS and DVD too. Then the internet comes along, and it is totally unregulated, but technically due to the 1959 act, it is still illegal for a website based in the UK to show pornography without hard age restriction.
The government is thinking of making it mandatory to check age of UK citizens using some magic technology that doesn't exist for all websites in and out of the UK or they will be permabanned from the britnet. They even floated the idea of making it so you have to buy access cards from cornershops / convenience stores where you'll have to show ID. So, not yet, but soon....
