Because the armata, unironically the best tank in the world, is too expensive to mass produce. The t-72 gets the job done well enough against anything they'll be fighting this century though. It's not like there's ever gonna be another fucking ground war in Europe.

I mean, theyve got so many fucking tanks they're scrapping most of them. Then they're upgrading their mid grade tanks, while building t-72s that have little in common with Soviet ones of decades ago. Eventually when their economy isn't being crippled by outside forces they'll ramp up armata production.

The first time the Israeli army faced T-72s was in 1982 during the Lebanon war and T-72s took out Merkavas from over a kilometer away, while the Merkava could only penetrate the T-72 frontally from 500meters with the newly made M-111 sabot round. The same goes for the TOW missiles.

Moreover those were T-72Ms which were original model T-72s and weren't even close to the armor protection or firepower of the T-72B being fielded at the time.

The T-72 was the whole reason the M1A1 was equipped with a 120mm gun after the US-made 105mm guns failed with Israel.

Oh and the Abrams never faced a contemporary T-72 ever. The T-72s from Iraq? Those were T-72M and M1s along side Asad Babil monkey models. They had long since worn-out the gun-barrel battle life expectancy in the Iraq-Iran war (where they decimated M-60 Patton tanks like nothing). They used ammunition from decommissioned soviet stocks dating from 1969, 20 years before the 1st Gulf War. Not to mention the gun sights and night vision were downgraded and taken off the far older original T-72 (also from 1969).The cannons were also old models instead of the 2A46 they used the 2A26. which had inferior muzle-velocity.
