we don't, but political change in Germany is very slow, and the party that has the most determined stance against immigration is absolutely shit in every aspect besides this one single issue

There were like 558.506 reported cases of assault in Germany last year. Since no nation wide newspaper can put them all on the front page it is normally just the local newspaper that has the local crimes.

I think most germans are torn apart by the refugee policy and merkel. On the one hand helping refugees seems to be a humanitarian issue and it's our duty to help people in need, whatever culture or skin colour they might have. On the other hand many germans do feel uncomfortable with such a huge influx of foreigners and get pissed of really fast when something like a terror attack or rape by a refugee happens. Merkel seems also hard to grasp, most of the time she is doing realpolitik and sits problems out rather then adressing them and her party is usually considered part of the conservative wing. Inviting refugees was untypical for Merkel and it left many people clueless how to think about her and the CDU.
The majority still prefers Merkel since she symbolises the continuity of a prospering economic situation, so there's no broad backup for political experiments like the AFD.
