Icelandic Television

What is it like for kids to grow up with Icelandic dubbing? What about those shows without Icelandic voice acting, do they get aired in Danish instead, do they get aired in only the foreign channels?

LazyTown is Icelandic.

>What is it like for kids to grow up with Icelandic dubbing?
Like growing up with dubbing in any language you speak. Why would Icelandic be different or snowflaky here?

I don't follow you on the rest.

Lazy Town is the only children show that I know natively Icelandic. Icelandic dubs are rare, which makes me wonder what those Icelandic kids grew up with before and after their internet made it easier to find more shit.

I don't get what you're trying to get from this question
I grew up with icelandic dubbing, it's normal for all kids shows and movies to be dubbed here

Another dying language unfortunately

They are almost entirely bilingual. English is mandatory to learn so it's not a problem

Icelandic dubbed things are very scarce and a voice acting industry there is even smaller than Finland. I want to know how or if kids get access to shows that never got Icelandic dubs. If they are dubbed in Danish instead, which is taught with the English classes in their school, or if they only watch non Icelandic dubbed shows through foreign channels.

>English is mandatory to learn so it's not a problem
Why do Anglo mutts think this matters? Only third worlders actually learn anything in English class rather than learning everything through cultural osmosis and shit.

They are not dubbed in danish, nothing here is. No one here actually learns the danish language well enough to effectively understand it
like I said earlier, every kids show brodcasted in icelandic television is brodcasted in icelandic, and same applies to all kid movies

Not all kids shows get dubbed, though. For instance, and forgive the example, shit like My Little Pony is not Icelandic other than the movie. Is the only way to watch shows that don’t have Icelandic dubs in Iceland with foreign channels? What about in the days before internet, does Iceland have dedicated children channels like other countries? I don’t mean like Cartoon Network, Discovery Kids, Disney, Nickelodeon, etc. I mean like how Germany has KiKA and Super RTL.

LazyTown is performed in English, THEN dubbed in Icelandic.

How often are dubs made for recent shows that only air on cable in other countries, Legend of Korra, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Gumball, We Bare Bears, Star Vs., Clarence, Wander Over Yander, etc.

She looks as ugly as ever even without the pink hair, make up, and outfit.

so you've never watched a single episode?

See >every kids show brodcasted in icelandic television is brodcasted in icelandic, and same applies to all kid movies
It's the same here, and our dubbing industry isn't big by any measure either.

>Is the only way to watch shows that don’t have Icelandic dubs in Iceland with foreign channels?
I can imagine they are developed enough to pick and choose nowadays.

You know, when I was a kid, all live-action shows on Disney Channel were subtitled instead of dubbed like the animated ones were (thank fuck for that, live-action dubs NEVER work), but nowadays when you visit people who have kids, you notice DC live-action shows are all dubbed for some ungodly reason. Maybe some similar development has been going on over there on Volcanoland, who knows?

We know, but most actors are Icelandic save for the lead and some others, so the Icelandic voice over is exceptionally good for that one. Scripts even go lengths to match the visuals there for the most part it seems, which is a nice effort.

>[citation needed]
That is how it is made, dude. The lead role is American and support cast is puppets and Icelanders.

Nope. The memes were disgusting and I was already too old for that shit.

i don't think they have tv's round those parts

Iceland has had TV channels since 1966.

I thought about it a bit and I do remember watching the old Teen Titans with subs, but generally the vast majority is going to be dubbed.

>Is the only way to watch shows that don’t have Icelandic dubs in Iceland with foreign channels?
Yes, and if it isn't dubbed it will have subtitles obviously
>does Iceland have dedicated children channels like other countries?
There's a station called Krakkastöðin, but that wasn't around when I was a kid.
When I was growing up there was a specific time frame each day when kids shows were brodcasted.

material that's both undubbed/unsubbed is not shown here on icelandic stations, obviously. Kids' skill with icelandic is already declining so I don't see why they would

>Kids' skill with icelandic is already declining
That's genuinely sad

Thanks for taking your time to answer my question. When you had to watch some stuff with subtitles as a kid on TV, was it in the original English language? Finland had the rare case where Sailor Moon aired with the Swedish dub and Finnish subtitles.

yeah it is, the overexposure of english from such a young age place a large role in that. There have been instances were I'm thinking of a word in english and don't remember what it was in Icelandic and it's one of the worst feels that I know others have felt too.
Thankfully my vocabulary isn't very effected since I grew up exposed to almost exclusively Icelandic
Yeah it was in english. What makes you interested in this stuff?

I have been interested in finding out what growing up in the ‘80s and ‘90s was like for Icelandic kids. I grew up outside North America, but the stuff in my native language and the media on TV and radio was not unlike the kids who grew up with the same cartoons, music, and games that I knew at their age before the internet.

what did he mean by this

>There have been instances were I'm thinking of a word in english and don't remember what it was in Icelandic and it's one of the worst feels that I know
Don't worry it is normal, we all experience it sometimes

This doesn’t have to do with any of OP’s questions but are you related to The Mountain?

I thought the penguins in pingu spoke icelandic for years

What i’m more curious about is Greenlandic dubs. Their language looks hard as shit for a nordic language.

i grew up in the late 90's/early 00's. Where did you grow up?
seperated by about 7 generations, not particularly related
Greenlandic is not a nordic language, it's not even in the same language family.
It is, the ISA(Icelandic Secret Agency) uses Pingu to transmit classified intelligence. Don't inform anyone of this

Latin America. I don’t think I missed out anything that people from the United States or Canada had with cartoons, music, and video games. Most of the Western and Northern European ones are also the same. It gets trickier with Eastern Europe before the wall fell, but Iceland being a remote island makes it hard to guess how much exposure kids had to the media I grew up with before the internet.

>seperated by about 7 generations

What does this mean?

Don't let your kids watch it!

I love Solla Stirða.

I want to go to Iceland, even though all I'll find is a small town, some hot springs, and a phallus museum.

>Greenlandic isn’t nordic
Uh sweety, it’s a nordic country

Why do I have to live in a country on retards like the person above me who i won’t give (you)s to.

Have you taken a shower that didn't smell like sulphur?

>Adventure
>Time

Don't ever mention that garbage on this website again.

>Kids' skill with icelandic is already declining
i guess i should start learning icelandic again. i dont wanna see it die.

Are you retarded?

>overexposure of english from such a young age place a large role in that.
Its happening everywhere, too. I despise that language.
