1793 – John Clare, "the Northamptonshire Peasant Poet".

He became an agricultural labourer while still a child. In an attempt to hold off his parents' eviction from their home, Clare offered his poems to a local bookseller named Edward Drury.

Clare was constantly torn between the two worlds of literary London and his often illiterate neighbours; between the need to write poetry and the need for money to feed and clothe his children. His health began to suffer, and he had bouts of severe depression.

As his alcohol consumption steadily increased, he went of his own volition to Dr Matthew Allen's private asylum.

Clare also took credit for Shakespeare's plays, claiming to be the Renaissance genius himself. "I'm John Clare now," the poet claimed to a newspaper editor, "I was Byron and Shakespeare formerly."

In 1841, Clare absconded from the asylum in Essex, to walk some 90 miles (140 km) home, believing that he was to meet his first love Mary Joyce. He did not believe her family when they told him she had died accidentally three years earlier in a house fire.

Clare was relatively forgotten during the later 19th century.

Forrest is considered one of the Civil War's most brilliant tacticians.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was born to a poor settler family in a secluded frontier cabin. He was the eldest son of blacksmith William Forrest's 12 children. Two of his brothers and his three sisters died of typhoid fever at an early age, all at about the same time. Forrest became the primary caretaker of the family at the age of sixteen.

Prior to the outbreak of the war, Forrest amassed substantial wealth as a cotton planter and slaver. By the time the American Civil War started in 1861, he had become one of the richest men in the South.

Promoted on July 21, 1862 to brigadier general, Forrest was given command of a Confederate cavalry brigade. He used his skills as a hard rider and fierce swordsman to great effect; he was known to sharpen both the top and bottom edges of his heavy saber. Forrest killed thirty enemy soldiers in hand-to hand combat.

Forrest's cavalry captured more Union guns, horses, and supplies than any other single Confederate unit.

In 1869, Forrest became disillusioned with Klan ordered its destruction. In the last years of his life, Forrest publicly denounced the violence and racism practiced by the Klan, insisted he had never been a member, and made repeated public speeches in favor of racial harmony. As an effort of reconciliation, during a meeting with African Americans in 1875, Forrest took flowers from a black woman, something that was considered abhorrent in the South during Reconstruction.

Out of habit, he was mild mannered, quiet in speech, exemplary in language, considerate, and generally kindhearted. Forrest rarely drank and he abstained from tobacco usage. When he was provoked or angered, however, he would become savage.
