No, because France and by extension Europe has to keep being involved in the Asia-Pacific. They'd become just another Chinese satellite and they know it. That's why the pro-independence side will lose. They entire local discourse has shifted from addressing France's colonial legacy to geopolitical realities.

A lot of Algerians were expelled and imprisoned there by the French after some late 19th century revolts, reports say their descendants constitute about 10% of the population now, the relationship between an independent New Caledonia and Algeria would be interesting.
