Russia is an undeniablely terrible place to live, it has a lower life expectancy than North Korea and a lower GDP per capita than Romania. Depsite this, Russians continue to elect (the elections may be blatantly and shamelessly rigged, but Putin is undeniablely immensely popular) strongmen content on pretending their country is an actual world power, instead of an increasingly irrelevant and deteriorating purgatory capable of exporting nothing besides oil and weapons. Now Western media may have led you to think Russia is an actual superpower. It is not. When American AC-130's turned Russian mercenaries into desert artwork all Russia could do was pretend it didn't happen. Russia has neither the economy or military to launch any kind of sustained campaign into Europe, the fear mongering you see about Russian military numbers is due to ancient equipment, the idea of Russia producing a sizeable number of modern weapon systems since the ruble crashed is laughable. Russia has zero allies of note or ways of exerting soft power. Russians also believe for some reason they are entitled to some kind of special status in the former Soviet sphere, however the current path of Ex-Soviet countries is clear and formulaic. It begins with the population deciding they would rather align with the West and pursue democracy and reasonable living standards instead of playing along with Russian delusions of Soviet era might, which Russia reacts to with thinly veiled threats (Baltics) or outright invasion (Georgia, Ukraine)

Much like joining the IMF, WHO, EU and other international/multinational institutions, joining NATO required a few preconditions before ascending to membership.
