Unless China democratizes and they hold some kind of referendum on the issue, they will never let Taiwan go. America will eventually reach a point where Taiwan will not be worth going to war over (even now I would wager they'd have doubts if push came to shove).

But it doesn't matter, anyway, because China won't take back Taiwan militarily. They'll continue to put diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan until eventually it chooses to join the mainland. The Chinese can wait. If it takes another 50 years, 100 years, so be it.
