Historical reasons probably. To some degree I can read Japanese kanji and get a rough idea of the sentence. The accuracy of the interpretation is questionable though since I don't have any knowledge of hiragana or katakana.

Average chinese can read several thousand characters, like 5 or so? Can't remember. average japanese is around 2-3. The more educated japanese is, the more kanji they recognize. Simplified/traditional characters is like American/british spelling, totally still recognizable.

Chinese speakers are able to determine meaning of most, if not all japanese kanji despite the differences in simplification (kind of like how english speaker can guess meaning of many french words) and with some understanding of japanese grammar and kana scripts, is capable of reading japanese text somewhat fluently.

China is scary and its people are not well mannered in most cases, and it sure is not really a good country for a long time, but at the same time, China and its culture are really huge for Japanese and I guess many of us have respect for China itself.

Japanese can use Kanji for countries like 英国 which as someone who knows Chinese and not Japanese can understand, but most of the time they'll use イギリス which I can't understand.
There are things like 中国,日本,韩国 which are China, Japan, and Korea respectively which are commonly used in Japanese, and things like 出口 which means exit but at the end of the day there is still a lot of Kanji that a Chinese speaker won't understand.

Japan got westernized earlier than other asian nations and of course many Japanese had an inferiority complex towards westerners. Imagine if you're an only asian student in the classroom that is full of rich white kids.
Japs thought other asians are unreasonably stuck with outdated societies and it's a legitimate right that conquering other asia. They thought it will be also eventually a good thing for other asians. so they tried to justify literally any brutal action in that way.

they can read them. but they use different kanji for some words especially new modern ones. and some are written slightly different. source: went to japanese language classes with a chinese/german girl. but I would say 99% is the same.
