Nationalism was a first a movement to get people to accept themselves as members of a bigger union instead of the small countries they were previously part of. That was the first nationalism of Germany and Italy. So yes, European nationalism is the natural successor to that.

The EU is politically more resilient that the US. The US government is so corrupt, it is now destroying the advantage it has on other nations (free trade).
