Seems like you guys liked my Forrest Gump challenge, even though it was hard as balls. Well, I got good news in that case. Friendly reminder: translate meaning over word for word translation! Don't make it sound awkward in your target language. Try to go for something more natural while retaining the same meaning.
If you guys don't like this, I'll stick to more modern sources, just let me know. Have fun!
Easy >The door is slightly ajar. >But there is no answer. >She starts up the stairs[.] (Alternatively, "She begins to climb the stairs.") >Scarlett has reached the top of the stairs. >No. I only know that I love you. (For languages with gendered pronouns, "I" is referring to a woman and "you" is referring a man.)
Medium >He is throwing into the bag toilet articles and a few other small things. (Alternatively, "He is throwing into the bag toiletry and a few small things.") >Rhett is sitting morosely in a chair. (Alternatively, "Rhett is sitting sadly in a chair.") >Suddenly he rises and goes to the window. >Scarlett rises to her feet frantically. >I'm going to Charleston, back where I belong.
Hard >She looks from right to left and moves around the great hall. >There is no mockery in his eyes. >So she's dead? That makes it nice for you, doesn't it? (Alternatively, "So she's dead. That makes it easy for you, doesn't it?") >But Rhett, if you go, where shall I go? What shall I do? >Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!
Too hard to put in the challenge hard >His emotion is that of a man who is saddened, first by the passing of Melanie for whom he has had deep feeling, and second by the realization that an important phase of his life is ended. >My darling, you're such a child. What? ‘fühlen’ only has ‘haben’ as auxiliary verb.
what the hell do you mean "haben" is an auxiliary verb

where is the "haben"

For those who would get some use out of these: >Ușa e un pic deschisă.
>Ich HABE mich schlecht gefühlt >I HAVE felt bad There you go. Something tells me you don’t really know what you’re taking about.
>using movie frames instead of anime reactions you need to go back

If I'm learning Russian and can read cyrillic at sort of a slow pace, is it worth writing the words down in the latin alphabet too? I have a million google docs files I use for vocab which is what I'm referring to
Justin Wright
Latin as in writing the word phonetically if I wasn't clear
Alexander Moore
Learning Hindi on Duolingo right now, have a couple of questions if anyone knows:
1. "ये मेरी माँ हैं।" Isn't that nasalized हैं used for plural? Why doesn't this sentence use the non-nasalized, 3rd person singular version?
2. जूलिया अपनी बहन के घर जाती है। My problem here is with के. My understanding is that a possessive structure with a masculine noun would use का rather than के, so why does "sister's house" contain के?
I'm sure this is dumb stuff but this course currently has no tips & notes section, and also no dedicated lesson for cases, so it can get pretty annoying.
Carter Morgan
just struggle through with cyrillic, it will get easier, using latin characters will only make it take longer to learn
Chase Morales
Was thinking it might interfere with my ability to remember vocab but alright
Brandon Garcia
it will likely slow down learning vocab as opposed to reading it in latin characters, just cause you'll take a bit longer to read the words, but i'd say it's worth it in the long run to get a good grip on cyrillic. i find it more difficult to read russian in latin than cyrillic, because i used cyrillic from the start, so you wouldn't want to become like that but in reverse and get stuck needing to use latin characters to read.
Oliver Jackson
True, figured I'd ask anyway.
Camden Watson
No, I doubt a lot of people here look into linguistics that in-depth. The most that people learn about linguistics is probably what wikipedia offers and anything necessary to learn their target language (which includes pronunciation, origin, writing system, language family).
