I read another less biased article, they wanted to travel the world and have fun, because "you're only young once and the world is a big place with a lot to see in ti". Like a million tourists before them. They did say they learned a lot about how deeply kind people can be from these travels--and I believe it. Every time I've been a tourist I'm shocked at how nice people are to me and how friendly they are, you hear a lot about anti-Americanism but people are always really sweet and helpful. Tajikistan is not a very violent country, (much less violent than USA, about on par with France) and I'm sure most people were very friendly. All it takes is one asshole to do a trucking. But its not like they'd have been safe even if they stayed put.
