its more like rivalry. both are large states in terms of population, area, and economy. both have very distinct culture outside of general american culture. california and texas see themselves more as mini countries than states and compete to be the best.

The cities are blue, but still level then have a significant red presence and anything outside of there is hard red, whereas in places like California the cities are HARD blue, and so even are the suburbs AFAIK

Everything of value in Texas is blue. It's increasingly becoming popular and nearly all of its urban areas including its economic hub is Democratic.

I thought Austin was considered liberal and Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio were still pretty conservative. Could that be in comparison to Californian cities?

that's not true in my experience. we don't really give a fuck about who you fuck, and we're not particularly racist. hell i was at a maiden concert in san antonio recently and the audience went crazy in cheer when dickenson went on a spiel about human solidarity regardless of race, nationality, sexual orientation, he even went as far as gender identity if i remember correctly. big chunk of the audience, maybe more than half, was tejano/hispanic, a lot in their older years.

Having Mexican family members cross the border whenever and wherever they want is a wedge issue for first generation US Hispanics. I've heard Hispanics making fun of Lupe Valdez because she's a bull dyke, but the majority will still vote for her because of this issue.
