Because the differences aren't that huge when it comes to prayers so it's usually fine if shias pray alongside sunnis.

I personally think the Sunni vs Shia split is because of Iran and Saudi Arabia. If Saudi Arabia really hated non-sunni heretics they would've genocided Ibadis(which arabs of the arabian peninsula used to do). Shias and Sunnis have historically coexisted with each other without a lot of problems.
