What happens if you don't tip in the US? I never pay the optional service tax here in brazil because i'm cheap and nothing happens, sometimes the waiter will look at me strange but fuck it, not giving people money for free

Always tip taxi drivers, just do it.
tipping is for betas who are afraid of confrontation
Do you want an honest answer and or a meme one?
honest to god
Nothing really, most people are too pussy to say/do anything
Nothing. But... if you want that QT, white grilll to like you, you best tip, BOY!
Besides looking greedy I guess nothing.
They try to guilt you by giving you a disappointed look, but they usually don't do shit about it.
lol I just read this on Quora quora.com
When it comes to taxi drivers (or Ubers if you’re so entitled) it’s always good to tip. There’s a secret network between them all to give you shitty ass drivers the less tips you give or they’re more likely to ignore you.
lol they will spit on your food the next time you come back
>There’s a secret network between them
Big if true, they could make revolution in America.
Basically some restaurants here are able
to use a loophole that allows them pay waiters very little if they allow them to collect tips. Therefore, waiters are dependent on them, and thus, the tipping culture was born
It’s courteous to tip 15-20% depending on how well your service was. This mostly applies at actual restaurants and food deliveries. Barbers also collect tips too
i thought you tipped everything
good thing i don't live in america then so it'll be the first and last time i go to the restaurant.
i still give them a tip though, my favourite is 'don't piss into the wind'
not him but there's always this worry that servers might spit in your food if you come back there and they recognize you as that person who doesn't tip
although even in places that i'm only visiting once, i feel the pressure to at least tip something unless service is awful, because servers take it as a personal insult when you tip a small amount, and tipping nothing is considered super disrespectful
the drivers rate you as customers
They spit in your food anyway. Those Mexicans in the kitchen are making half of minimum wage. It's the price we all pay for everlasting freedom.
you guys always tipped me well.
We only tip waitresses, the people who return shopping carts, and the gym receptionist.
In USA they practically extort the tip out of you, so it's probably a right thing not to tip, but it deserves some guts to do.
>and tipping nothing is considered super disrespectful
Kek I just can't fathom this, seriously, it's funny to see these hard culture shocks, I'm having a hard time right now
Good to know, I would totally forget to tip if I were there, it would be fucked
doesn't surprise me desu, in all seriousness we probably tip more than needed to make sure we don't fuck it up
If you want to know the history of tipping, it goes back the to Great Depression and Baby Boomers. During the depression was when Tipping first started due to pay being so astronomically garbage you HAD to get tips in order to survive
>Sir, was there something wrong with your service?
>No, it was fine.
>I see. It's just that, normally customers leave a tip; to show their appreciation.
>I don't tip.
>Oh. Well, please understand; when we decide the prices, we assume a 10-20% tip from most customers; and factor that into our business model. So the cost of the meal was cheaper, because we assumed that people will tip.
>Not my problem.
>I see.
paraphrased from memory, but this is a real conversation my uncle had at a Denny's restaurant. It felt awkward as hell. The restaurant manager was had a very polite tone; but I could tell that she was pissed off underneath. I was just a little kid with no money, so I didn't do anything.
I'm a pizza guy. I honestly don't give a shit about tips, I get paychecks.
yeah, group of lads came in and we had just closed(hip hotel bar in Portland), I always will get you another beer or drink if youre taking it to your room or aren't belligerent. Bartender got you a round of beers for happy hour price and you tipped her $20(drinks were $24). Then tipped me $5 for being there lol. I tried to turn it down because I didn't do anything, but you brother wasn't having it lol
I seriously fucking hate tipping. It's complete bullshit. I'm leaving the US and never eating out here again.
They spit in your food if you go back
Also, I was recently informed that the "floor" for tipping is now 15%. What the fuck? I've been giving 10% if they did a good job
>Well, please understand; when we decide the prices, we assume a 10-20% tip from most customers; and factor that into our business model. So the cost of the meal was cheaper, because we assumed that people will tip.
This was a lie though
I feel like thats crap because they still get a normal minimum wage right? So its just adopting what we do. Though servers do indeed do more than your average minimum wage worker.
Oh, it's total crap. My girlfriend is a waitress at a small restaurant, and she'll earn anywhere between $70-$130 in tips alone on a decently busy shift, on top of the minimum wage she earns.
The only reason I don't make her pay for me every time we go out is because her mom doesn't work so she has to pay like a grand a month in bills
>Tip haircutters
>Tip waiters
>Tip delivery boys
>Tip bartender
>Tip bag carriers
>Tip grocery baggers at some stores
>Tip Taxi drivers
yeah and your uncle is a fucing pussy.
only a pussy doesn't tip at the end, full well knowing the server is working to reflect the tip they think they'll be getting.
ive said it on a few of these threads that come up every week. when I was serving, idc if you dont tip, but tell me at the beginning of the meal, so I can relegate your service to the 3.25/hr I make to serve your table. You'll get service, youre just not my priority. Ive had people who feel that way about tipping and tell me at the beginning and I dont care. But only a sad excuse of a person intends to take advantage of someone like that.
I made 20-35/hr on night shifts. Its pretty awesome lol.. but Its the exact opposite of what happens in the rest of the country where they're gipped.. and barely make above min wage, because of a loophole that lets companies pay their workers less and claim it affects prices..which Seattle and Portland have proved false.
Yeah, that law is fucked. I'm not even opposed to tipping, I'm just opposed to a tip "floor" and how it continues to rise.
My basic philosophy is that I'll start at 10%. If the service is bad or slow, I'll reduce the tip from there. If it's better than I expected, I'll go up. But a 15% MINIMUM is fucking retarded. Especially because these servers make more than I do.
yeah I was always happy with 20, satisfied with 15, and wondered what I did wrong with 10. I don think ive ever really been straight up gipped on a bill straight up. Then again im not an idiot, and if shit was wrong I knew it in advance and was getting a manager to fix your bill and make it up to you in advance.. and was always tipped well because of it I think.
Damn, you hate adding 15% to the bill so much that you are emigrating? That’s hardcore.
See, I don't give 10 because I think that you did anything wrong. I give 10 because I make shit in my job and because I'm a student. And most people will say "just don't eat out" but fuck that, if my friends want to eat out with me I'll go eat out with them.
Youre in canada, not the same. Unless you do it here, which ill still think youre a dick.. but it wouldn't like end my whole day and id go home and cry myself to sleep. id forget about it soon after. However I doubt youre running up a 100+ dollar bill to yourself where it actually influences my amount nightly take home really.
No, I suppose that's true. The difference between 10 and 15 is often negligible
I guess, at the heart of it, I just don't want society telling me what I HAVE to do
I was pretty much against tips until that sweet sweet cash started to creep into my pockets (shit's cash)
I always thank people who tip me and sometimes even inform them it's not really necessary to do it, but i'm glad when i'm busting my ass and my service is appreciated.
Ever since i've started receiving them, started to hand them out aswell.
what better way to end your meal than figuring out 15% of 39.45
