the balls were introduced a while back as a water saving measure, it was meant to, as OP said, mitigate loss of water via evaporation.
now people are debating whether or not these balls could present a risk of plastic pollution.
IMO plastic is in a lot of the water we drink and it's bad for us, you should always store your water in glass containers.
