nixon was the paradigm shift, he was actually a liberal republican if that makes sense, except the economy hit and there was a very bad crises, most people only remember the space shuttles and delorean but the 80s was a very dark and violent place and reagan was a trusted face with a plan (not his own plan ofc) and the republican base surged back, they knew when reagan got office they (recent college graduate neoliberals) could do all kind of new things when nixon had been a hound dog watching over them, they pulled the power behind dc, clinton was a fluke, he ran polls and changed his positions based on polls, something completely knew at the time, and everything else is history
