I am black yeah. I wasn't born here though so I'm cheating a bit but having been here many times, here's what i can say: The country is very poor but surprisingly safe, no crime at all really. It is really hot, even in the summer which is supposedly their winter (tropical climate). In december, it gets even warmer and damper.

There are beautiful landscapes and beaches, lush forests. It does not compare with the continent, but it had a lot of charm.

It is really not ready for tourism though: basically, there are no street names; when people give you directions, they will say "next to x's cousin's house" or stuff like that, so unless you actually live there and immerse yourself, it's hard to make sense of the country. There are a couple of nice hotels though.

On the political side, there is very little state presence and it shows. The consecutive presidents have mostly been there to get however little money the country has and stuff their faces. Therefore, there are very few infrastructures. For example, only in recent years have all cities on Ngazidja (the largest island) been getting their electricity from the state. Before that, the people from each city had to buy a big motor to provide it to their people. Similarly, there is no one to oversee construction projects, hence "big" cities tend to have a very chaotic architecture : there is usually a historic center that kinda looks like something you would find in Shiraz, Yemen (but un-maintained) and around it, an undescribable mess comprising construction sites, houses made of concrete, and many favela-tier houses made of wood and metal sheets.
The society is still quite traditional with a great emphasis on family and religion. Islam there is pretty chill too, they don't badger foreigners, women don't have to wear a hijab, they don't kill gays or drunks or weed smokers etc.
Really, if only the state would take care of the bare essentials (hospitals, schools, roads, water), we could really have a nice thing going.
